TWU Spartans (58) at the University of Manitoba Bisons (56)

That's Won....

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's Shannon Lockhart played the hero tonight. Just when the Spartans' game at the University of Manitoba looked like it was going to go into overtime, Lockhart drove the length of the floor and pulled up for a jumper with .68 seconds remaining. The shot missed its target, but Manitoba was called for a foul on the shot. Lockhart then stepped to the line and had "nothing but net" as she gave the Spartans the two point victory, 58-56.

"We have been in a number of close games against some very good teams this year, so it is nice to finally be rewarded on the scoreboard," said TWU head coach Danielle Gardner. "They [TWU] have been working so hard all year, and tonight we responded to last night and had some players really step up and play well."

The Spartans have pushed a number of top teams throughout the season: a 4-point loss, (68-64) to the #1-ranked University of Winnipeg, an 8-point loss to Bishops (who were ranked 10th at the time), and a 3-point loss (62-59) to #7 University of Victoria.

Tonight's game was a closely fought affair for the entire forty minutes. The Spartans held a one-point edge, 28-27 at the end of the first half, but Manitoba responded in the second half.

The Bisons (3-7) eventually forged ahead 52-49 with a few minutes remaining, but TWU's (1-9) close battles this season have prepared the young Spartans to play in pressure situations. TWU clawed their way back and with less then a minute remaining had taken a three-point lead. Lockhart went one for two from the line to put the Spartans up four points. Manitoba then went down and drained an open three to make the game a one-point affair. Manitoba quickly fouled TWU's Heidi DeHaan. DeHaan went 1-2 to increase TWU's lead to two points with twenty seconds remaining. Manitoba's Lynda Guy then hit a jumper in the lane to tie the game at 56-56 with 7.2 seconds remaining. The Spartans called a time out and then gave the ball to Lockhart, who drove the length of the floor.

Shannon Lockhart (1st yr, guard, Abbotsford, BC) - 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, Kelsey Smith (1st yr forward, Abbotsford, BC) - 13 points and Heidi DeHaan (3rd yr guard, Lynden, WA) - 12 points, 6 rebounds led the Spartans, while Anna Drewniak - 15 points, 11 rebounds and Lynda Guy - 12 points, 6 rebounds led the Bisons. TWU's Kim Mellieur led both teams with 13 rebounds (7 offensive).

TWU now returns home to take on the #5 ranked University of British Columbia on Friday, January 10. Game time is set for 6:00 pm at TWU.

Game Notes: What a difference a day makes: the style of the game was the same and the teams that were playing were the same, but last night Manitoba had 11 fouls called and the Spartans only had 6 free throw attempts (zero in the second half). Tonight the Bisons were called for 26 personal fouls and the Spartans took 31 foul shot. Saturday night's game was poorly officiated or called correctly; it all depends how you look at it...The win is the Spartans' first league win of the season and the first time that TWU has beaten the University of Manitoba in women's basketball...The Spartans also had a season low in turnovers with 12.
