Women's Basketball (Laurentian University Tournament)

TWU Spartans (77) at the Laurentian University Vees (88)

Run and Gun Game Excites Fans

Langley, British Columbia - After a difficult debut against Laval University Friday night, the Trinity Western University women's basketball team gave the hometown Laurentian University Vees everything they could handle in Saturday night's match. The Spartans pushed the Vees throughout the game before dropping the game 88-77.

"I was very pleased with the energy and effort that we brought to the game tonight," said TWU head coach Danielle Gardner.

Dealing with the Vees full-court pressure for most of the game, the Spartans found ways to get to the basket, which resulted in a fast-paced, end-to-end basketball game. The Spartans ran into foul trouble in the first half, which resulted in the Vees going to the free throw line 21 times in the first 20 minutes. The advantage from the line contributed to the Vees having an eight-point lead at the half, 46-38.

The Spartans stayed with the Vees for the first part of the second half, but once again foul shots made a difference as the Vees made another nineteen trips to the line in the second half. The made free throws allowed the Vees to open up a fourteen-point lead, 83-69, with four minutes remaining. TWU closed the gap down the stretch, but the lead proved too great to overcome.

Lee Wedlake and Shannon Lockhart led the Spartans with 20 points each, with Wedlake adding seven boards to her totals. Taylor Stuart and Heidi DeHaan led the team in the passing department with seven and six assists, respectively. Tierney Hoo led the Vees with 25 points.

Next up for the Spartans is the final game of the tournament against the University of Waterloo Warriors. Game time in Sudbury is set for 11:00 am.
