TWU Spartans (60) vs. the University of Calgary Dinos (88)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DINOS TOP SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Turnovers were costly to the Trinity Western University women's basketball team Saturday night against the visiting University of Calgary. The Dinos played a physical game and took advantage of 29 Spartan turnovers to hand the home-team an 88-60 loss.

The win improves the ninth ranked Dinos to 2-2, while the loss drops the Spartans to 3-3.

The Spartans started well and on the back of Corina Reimer (Abbotsford, B.C.) quickly jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. The Dinos gradually regrouped as the quarter wound down and ended with the two team tied at 15-15.

The second quarter was Calgary's. On the strength of their full court pressure the Dinos went on an 18-5 run to take a 33-20 lead with just over three minutes remaining. The Spartans responded and were able to narrow the margin to nine points, 36-27 at the half.

The start of the second half had both teams working to take control of the game. With seven minutes remaining the Dinos still had their nine point lead, 40-31. Then the Dinos made the game physical and forced TWU into a number of turnovers. Calgary used the turnovers and transition baskets to break the game open with an 18-8 run to go up 58-39 with 1:30 remaining. TWU battled back on baskets by guard Lindsey Gustafson (1st year, Mission, B.C.) to make it a 14-point game, 58-44 with under a minute remaining. Whitney Haswell (Oakville, Ont.) would hit a basket on Calgary as the clock ran down to give the Dinos a 60-44 lead at the break.

The fourth quarter had Calgary's Ashley Hill (Airdrie, Alta.) catch fire and stifle any TWU rally. Hill hit 12 points in the quarter to break the game open as the Dinos topped TWU 88-60.

Heather Van Wieren (4th year, post, Walnut Grove, B.C.) 12 points and 12 rebounds led the Spartans, while Hill and Haswell with 22 points each led the Dinos.

The Spartans now go on the road to Kamloops, B.C. for two games against Thompson Rivers University. Game times on Fri. Nov. 16 and Sat. Nov. 17 are set for 6 p.m.
