TWU Spartans (49) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (66)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS OPEN '08 WITH TOUGH LOSS

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- To open the second half of the Canada West schedule, the University of Victoria Vikes came into Trinity Western's David E. Enarson Gym and took a 66-49 win from the Spartans. The two teams are now tied for third in the Pacific Division, with identical 7-6 records.

"We did a great job in the first half," said TWU Head Coach Kerby Court. "But we struggled in the third quarter and that ended up being the difference in the game. But we will look at what we need to do to correct or mistakes and get back at it again tomorrow night."

The Vikes' win splits the season series, with each team now having won on the other's home court. In Victoria's October 27th home opener at McKinnon Gym, the Spartans needed a last second hoop from Katie Haworth to come away with a 60-58 victory.

In Friday night's match-up, late game heroics were not required as the Vikes sailed into the final quarter of action with a commanding 17-point lead. Vikes third-year post Kayla Dykstra had a monster game with a game high 17 points and 15 rebounds. The Calgary native helped the Vikes recapture the lead just before the first half, scoring on three straight trips down the floor.

After the completion of the first half of basketball, the Vikes clung to a 22-21 lead. Both sides never shot the ball particularly well in the opening quarters, exhibiting an expected post-holiday offensive lull. However, the Vikes offense came to life in a decisive third quarter, out-scoring TWU 24-8. The Vikes finished the night shooting 45.3 percent, and making a season-best 89 percent of their free-throw attempts, while the Spartans finished shooting 28.6 percent from the field and struggled from the line shooting 46.7 percent.

Canada West leading scorer Ryan McKay netted 15 points. It was only the second conference game this season in which the Fredericton native did not lead the Vikes in scoring. Fifth-year forward Janet Hatfield contributed nine points, and also hauled in 11 'boards to help the Vikes gain a 41-22 advantage on the glass.

Trinity Western received 15 points from Laura Craig, who shot 6-for-10 from the field. Haworth also chipped in 10 points.

The season series between the Vikes and Spartans concludes Saturday night. With the series being tied at a game apiece, the match could serve as a tiebreaker in the Canada West playoff picture. Tip-off is 6 p.m., with the game being broadcast live on Spartan Web Radio.
