Spartans Battle Canada

Langley, British Columbia - In front of 550 plus exuberant soccer fans the Trinity Western University soccer team matched up against the Canadian U19 national team Saturday night at the TWU Spartan Field Complex. Canada came out on top 2-0 as the two squads put on an entertaining performance.

"We had a great atmosphere here tonight and I was pleased that our team battled as well as they did against a solid team," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "They showed why they are a national team. They created space and moved the ball around well."

Canada opened the scoring quickly when forward Aysha Jamani (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring in the third minute. Aysha broke into the Spartan back line got past the last defender and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give Canada the early 1-0 lead.
Canada kept the pressure on the Spartans for much of the half. Then in the 26th minute TWU's Ashlee Davison (4th yr, forward, Maple Ridge, BC) got a partial break away against Canada. Davison took her shot from the top of the box, but the well-struck ball sailed just wide of the target.
Canada got their second goal off of a set piece in the 39th minute. After a foul on a Spartan midfielder Canadian midfielder Kara Lang (Oakville, ON) took the free kick from ten yards past the center mark and on the left side of the pitch. Lang sent a rocket high over the Spartan wall and into the top corner of the TWU net to give Canada a 2-0 lead going into the half.
The Spartans came out strong to start the second half. Led by midfielder Katie Smart (3rd yr, midfield, Langley, BC) TWU outshot Canada 4-1 in the first 30 minutes of the second half.

"I was pleased with the way we responded and shored things up in the second half and that we were able to create some quality scoring opportunities," said Roxburgh. "We had some good all around performances, but our back for were superb in the their play tonight."
Smart almost cut the lead in half with less than 15 minutes to play. Smart found the loose ball on the far left side of the box, where she one timed a high hard shot over Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe (Stoney Plain, AB) and off of the center of the crossbar.
Canada responded with four solid scoring opportunities over the remaining minutes. But TWU keeper Angela Garriott (3rd yr, Campbell River, BC) was up to the task as she made four solid stops, including two off of Aysha Jamani.
Jamani's performance (seven shots) and TWU midfielder Whitney Agassiz (2nd yr, Langley, BC) presence in the midfield earned each player the Soccer West Player of the Game award for exceptional play in tonight's match.
"This was a great test for us, and playing a team of this quality will only elevate us as we carry on our league campaign," said Roxburgh.

Tonight's match was part of Canada's preparation for the FIFA U19 World Championship in Thailand, Nov. 10-27. The team recently won the CONCACAF championship (World Cup qualifying) in Ottawa and will be training in Vancouver for the next two months. TWU (8-3-1) continues Canada West conference play next week at the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 25.
Match Notes: Canada's Labbe made one save to earn the shutout, while TWU's Garriott was solid with ten stops in the match...Canada outshot TWU 20-6 and held the edge in corners at 6-0...Tonight's match was made possible through the sponsorship of Soccer City and Athletes in Action Soccer...
