Spartans Move Into Top Spot in Canada West

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team defeated the University of Saskatchewan 4-0 Saturday afternoon, and in the process ensured themselves of at least a share of first place with UBC in the final Canada West league standings. The win improves the #7 ranked Spartans to 9-2-3 and puts them one win ahead of the # 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds (8-2-3), who lost 3-2 to Alberta this afternoon. UBC has a game remaining against Saskatchewan and needs the win to tie the Spartans.

The Spartans came out flying, and within ten minutes had a 2-0 lead on the Huskies. Forward Emily Bond (2nd yr Langley, BC) opened the scoring in the ninth minute and was followed with a goal by teammate Carlee O'Brien (2nd yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) a minute later.

Forward Rachelle Armstrong (1st yr, Victoria, BC) made the score 3-0 for the Spartans with a goal in the 43rd minute.

Up 3-0 at the half TWU's Alexis Heinz (4th yr, midfielder, Surrey, BC) made the score 3-0 in the 57th minute of the second half.

A few minutes later Saskatchewan forward Jen Tameling seriously injured her shoulder on a fall to the ground. The game was delayed for almost an hour as she received medical treatment.

When the match resumed the Spartans had a few opportunities but were unable to improve on their lead.

The loss drops the Huskies to 3-9-1 on the season.

Next up for the Spartans is the Canada West Playoffs at the University of British Columbia on Saturday, November 6. Time of the semi-final match is yet to be determined.

UBC and TWU have earned the top two spots in Canada West, but the final two spots have yet to be determined. UBC can still finish in top spot with a win against Saskatchewan Sunday. Victoria currently is in third with 21 points, with Alberta and Calgary tied for fourth with 20 points. Victoria has one game left against Alberta, Alberta has Victoria and Calgary left, while Calgary has Lethbridge and Alberta remaining. Each of the three teams could be in or out of the playoffs depending on how the final games play out.
