TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (0) - 3-1 in PK

Spartan Women Going For Gold

Vancouver, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team will battle the University of Calgary Sunday afternoon for the Canada West gold medal and a berth at the CIS national championships next week in Montreal.

The Spartans earned their way into the gold medal match with a 1-0 penalty kick (3-1) victory over the University of Victoria Vikes Saturday afternoon in the Canada West semifinal.

TWU keeper Angela Garriott (3rd yr, Campbell River, BC) came up big in the penalty kicks, stopping two Victoria shots as the Spartans needed only four shots to take the game 3-1. Lindsay Rohla, Alexis Heinz (4th yr, midfield, Surrey, BC) and Katie Smart (3rd yr, midfield, Langley, BC) scored the goals for the Spartans, while Mariel Solsberg scored the lone goal for the Vikes.

"I'm really pleased, our defense played fantastic all game long," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "Today you had two very good teams playing very well; unfortunately one team had to lose. Victoria's keeper made some great saves to keep us off the score sheet."

TWU's Linday Rohla (2nd yr, Langley, BC) almost gave the Spartans the victory in the 85th minute but her shot was stopped when Jill Carruthers made a great save to keep the match tied at 0-0.

The Calgary Dinos knocked of the two time defending CIS National Champion UBC Thunderbirds 4-3 in Saturday's other semifinal match.

Sunday's gold medal match will be played at 1:30 at Point Grey Secondary at the corner of 38th Ave and East Boulevard (next to Kerrisdale Arena).
