SPARTANS OPEN PRE-SEASON
-Strong showing by new-comers in 1-0 loss

DAYTON, Ohio
- On a soggy evening at Alumni Field, the Trinity Western University women’s soccer team opened the 2007 pre-season with a 1-0 loss to Wright State University Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio. The Raiders Amy Miller scored the lone goal in the 50th minute to give the home team the win.

“We were missing a few key starters due to injury so overall this was a good performance when you consider how banged up we are,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “I was very pleased with some rookies and I thought Chantal [Esperanza] and Dana [DuMerton] were very good for us tonight.”

The Raiders came out firing in the first half, attempting seven shots but failed to get one past Spartan keeper Leah Schmelter. In the net for the Raiders was Meghan Hackerson, who faced just one shot in the half, making one save.

Miller finally broke through with a goal early in the second half, on a crossing pass from Desire Morris, which would serve as the eventual game-winner. Morris brought the ball up the near sideline and served a crossing pass into the box. Miller controlled the ball and sent a shot into the upper half of the net to give WSU a 1-0 lead.

Trinity Western then responded by firing off ten shots in the half, two of which were cleared off of the line. Freshman keeper Angie Baker replaced Hackerson in the 69th minute and recorded two saves to preserve the shutout.

The Spartans drop to 0-1 in the pre-season, while the Raiders improve to 1-0 in the exhibition season. TWU will now head to Oxford, Ohio for a match with the Miami University of Ohio on Wednesday, August 22 at 4 p.m., while WSU will return to action on Friday, August 24 also against Miami.

Match Notes: TWU was without the services of Lindsay Rohla, Melissa Mobilio and Kayla Davison...It was TWU forward Carlee O’Brien’s first go with the team since arrive home Sunday from the FISU games in Bangkok...WSU outshot TWU 13-11...the Raiders had the edge over the Spartans 13-2 in corner kicks...Wright State is an NCAA Division I school and currently play in the Horizon League (formerly the Midwestern Collegiate Conference)...
