TWU Spartans (3) at Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars (0)

- The 2006 Canada West Champion Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the 2006 National Christian College Athletic Association Champion Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon, Ohio. It was a solid end to the Spartans four match road trip through the State. After losing their first match to Wright State on Tuesday, TWU will return home on a two match winning streak and a record of 2-1-1.

“It was a solid team effort and a good way to finish our road trip,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We did a good job of controlling the midfield and I was pleased that we were able to get lots of minutes for our players.”

Third year forward Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 17th minute with her second goal of the season. DuMerton was sprung open on a neat through-ball from midfielder Lindsay Rohla (5th year, Langley, B.C.).

TWU took a two goal lead into the half after rookie Daniela Gerig (forward, Langley, B.C.) was sent in alone on a breakaway on a pass from teammate Whitney Agassiz (5th year, midfield, Salmon Arm, B.C.). The goal gives Gerig two markers in the last two matches.

The Spartans controlled much of the play in the first half out-shooting the Cougars eight to two.

TWU’s Kassi Plummer (2nd year, midfield, Calgary, Alta.) headed in her first goal as a Spartan and rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute. Plummer was able to convert a cross from Rebecca Ferguson (2nd year, midfield, Calgary, Alta.) to make the final 3-0 for the Spartans.

TWU keeper Lauren Chartrand (1st year, Powell River, B.C.) made five saves and recorded the win with her second straight shut-out. The Spartans defense has been solid over the last two and a half matches. TWU has not yielded a goal in over 235 minutes of play. “Lauren made a couple of outstanding saves to keep them off the score sheet,” commented Roxburgh.

Cougar keepers Melissa Peters (SR, Mount Vernon) and Jenessa Loewen (FR, Gravenhurst, Ont.) each played 45 minutes in the loss.

The match, which is a counter for the Cougars, drops MVNU to 0-1-1 overall. They tied Wooster 5-5 in an exhibition match on Aug. 21. Next up for the Cougars is a road trip to Oregon to play Corban College and Concordia University on Aug. 28 and Aug. 30. Their next home match is on Sept. 5 against Malone.

The Spartans will scrimmage Langara College on Thursday, September 30. Match time at TWU is 7:15 p.m. TWU will open Canada West conference play the following week on Fri. Sept. 7 and Sat. Sept. 8 against the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge. Both matches have a 5 p.m. kick off at TWU’s Spartan Field.

Match Notes: TWU out shot MVNU 15-7...the Cougars had the edge in corner kicks at 4-2...the Spartans were called four times for offside infractions...
