TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS HOLD ON FOR VICTORY
-Rogina records win in return to TWU line-up.

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Spartan forward Carlee O’Brien (5th year, Nanaimo, B.C.) scored the eventual game winner with her second goal of the weekend to lead Trinity Western University to a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday evening at TWU’s Spartans field.

The win moves the fourth ranked Spartans to 2-0 in Canada West league play, while the loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-1-1.

TWU opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a corner kick by midfielder Lindsay Rohla (5th year, Langley, B.C.). From the left corner Rohla sent a high ball curling toward the Pronghorns far post and teammate Whitney Agassiz (5th year, defender, Salmon Arm). But by the time Agassiz got near the ball the shot had cleared the outstretched hands of Lethbridge keeper Megan Lumley (Lethbridge, Alta.) and passed into the Pronghorns net to give Rohla her first goal of the season and the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

O’Brien scored the eventual game winner in the 33rd minute. The fifth year forward took advantage of a defensive line that had moved to close to midfield. The Spartans Christine Walker (2nd year, defender, White Rock, B.C.) gained control of the ball on the TWU side of half and sent the speedy O’Brien in alone on a through ball down the right central part of the park. O’Brien took control of the ball and with pace ran at Lumley. She then pushed the ball past the charging keeper to go in alone to put the home team up 2-0. The Spartans dominated the play in the first half. They held an 11-3 edge in shots, but were not able to distance themselves further from the Pronghorns.

The second half had the Spartans continuing to control the play, but being unable to break the match open. O’Brien nearly made it a three goal margin in the 58th minute when her shot from close in went off of the Pronghorns post.

The Pronghorns did not back down they kept pushing towards the TWU net. Lethbridge’s Janelle Groten (1st year, Lethbridge, Alta.) made it a one goal deficit when she headed in a corner kick from teammate Andrea Nippard (1st year, Calgary) in the 70th minute.

TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (2nd year, Surrey, B.C.) made one save to record her first win of the season, while Lethbridge’s Lumley made eight saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is hosting the University of Regina Cougars on Friday, September 14th and the University of Manitoba on Saturday, September 15th. Kick-off on both night’s is set for 5 p.m. at TWU’s Spartan Field.

Match notes: Today’s match was the first for Rogina since she broke her leg in a spring season match in February against the UBC Thunderbirds...Rohla and O’Brien each had six shots for the Spartans, while Kristen Ahearn (3rd year, Calgary) and Janelle Groten each had two for the Pronghorns...
