TWU Spartans (0) at the University of British Columbia (3)

-UBC hands TWU second loss of the season.

VANCOUVER - The fourth ranked Trinity Western University women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the third ranked University of British Columbia Friday night at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium. After a 1-1 draw in Langley in Friday, it was expected to be another tight game between the nation's third-ranked T-Birds (5-1-1) and fourth-ranked Spartans (6-2-1).

But tonight the Thunderbirds controlled the first half of play and were able to take advantage of their opportunities in a more evenly played the second half. "I was disappointed that we came out flat and that it took us until they scored their second goal before we started to play with any fight," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Corporately we were poor, we were second to the ball and we made poor decisions. But in terms of play it wasn't a 3-0 game. We were much better in the second half and we had two or three good chances after it was 2-0 which could have changed the game."

UBC outshot TWU 8-2 in the opening half and enjoyed a fair share of possession. The Thunderbirds were finally rewarded in the 41st minute when rookie midfielder Lisa Furutani made the most of a cross that skidded through the Spartans box. Furutani put the home side in front 1-0 with a well struck ball from 15 yards in front of TWU keeper Veronika Rogina.

"We had a good balance in terms of offence and defence today," said UBC head coach Dick Mosher, "and any time you get three goals against a team like Trinity, you're doing very well. We've been working on attacking more and it showed a bit today.

"I think they're certainly one of the top teams in the country, no doubt about it, and it's a strong result for us."

The second half was more evenly played but it was UBC that did all the damage. Third-year midfielder Sarah Treloar made it 2-0 in the 71st minute when she settled the ball about 20 yards out to the right of the Spartans goal and curled a left footed shot neatly inside the far post.

With the Spartans playing three up to try and get on the board UBC rookie midfielder, Natalie Hirayama, made the final 3-0 with an extra-time goal. Hirayama scored from 22 yards out with a left-footed blast that found the right corner of TWU's net.

All-Canadian keeper Jackie Dunnett, who returned from a shoulder injury last week, is now 2-0-1 with one goal against in her three starts, making five saves on Friday.

Rogina turned aside two shots for the Spartans.

"When you've got a CIS first team keeper," said Mosher, "you want her back in there. And she's played very, very well since she's been back."

UBC hosts Fraser Valley Saturday at 2 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium, while Trinity Western heads to the Island to take on the Vikes. Match time on Saturday in Victoria is set for 5 p.m. Victoria defeated UCFV 3-0 Friday.

"This can't go to our heads," continued Mosher. "Three nothing flatters us a little bit. They're going to come back next time and we're going to have to be ready for it, but for now we'll take it."

Match Notes: Corners were 6-2 for UBC in the game and total shots were 14-9 for the T-Birds, with the Spartans outshooting UBC 7-6 in the second...Shots on goal were even at five a piece... It was a cleanly played game with just 12 fouls combined and no cautions...
