FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS AND CLAN BATTLE TO DRAW
-Rohla sets new standard

Burnaby, British Columbia. - Lindsay Rohla (Langley, B.C.) became the first Trinity Western University soccer player to go over the 5000 minute mark in the Spartans 2-2 non-conference draw with Simon Fraser University Wednesday night on Burnaby Mountain. The fifth year defender, who scored the games opening goal, finished with 5001 minutes and also tied former Spartan Angela Trauter (2001-2005) for career starts with 88.

The 19th-ranked (NAIA) Clan (7-2-2) needed a goal in the 80th minute by Caitlyn Young to tie the sixth-ranked (CIS) Spartans (6-3-1).

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Rohla directed a perfect corner kick into the box, which tipped off an SFU defender and passed freshman Clan keeper Jessica Davies. SFU responded in the 22nd minute when Hailey Rawlings started a rush up the right side and fired a shot in on TWU keeper Ana Pruim (1st year, Delta, B.C.). Pruim made the initial stop, but the rebound went to the Clan's Catlin Carruthers. In a melee in front of the goal Carruthers was able to tip the ball passed Pruim, knotting the score at 1-1.

Play opened up in the second half, as both teams were able to create more offensive opportunities. Finally in the 63rd minute Christine Walker (2nd year, White Rock, B.C.) started a rush up the left side, placing a pass perfectly between three Clan defenders and on the foot of Daniela Gerig (1st year, forward, Langley, B.C.). Gerig controlled the feed and beat Davies, who was coming out of her goal to challenge Gerig.

It appeared that the Spartans were going to leave Burnaby Mountain with the victory, however in the 79th minute Aly Benes started a fantastic rush up the left side of the pitch, shaking two defenders and forcing a ball in on goal passed Pruim. Young was fighting off a TWU defender in the box and tipped the ball into the low right corner of the open goal to tie the game at 2-2. SFU had two late free kick opportunities in Spartan territory; however the Clan were unable to take advantage.

SFU led in shots 6-to-4, while the Spartans committed 24 fouls to the Clan's 12. TWU also led in saves (3-to-2) and corner kicks (6-to-5).

Next up for the Spartans is a Canada West conference match up with the University College of the Fraser Valley on Saturday, October 13. Match time at Abbotsford's Bateman Park is set for 1 p.m.
