TWU Spartans (1) at the University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS SETTLE FOR DRAW

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia - The sixth ranked Trinity Western University (6-3-2) women's soccer team had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw with the University College of the Fraser Valley (2-7-2) Saturday afternoon at Abbotsford's Bateman Park.

"All credit to UCFV, they battled and made it very difficult for us," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "I don't think that we are playing as well as we can. We are having difficulty finding our offensive rhythm and it was disappointing that we didn't take advantage of some of our good chances. We finish those and we walk away feeling good about the outcome."

TWU, who outshot UCFV 7-3, had a number of quality forays into the Cascade's side of the field - the most notable coming from forward Carlee O'Brien (Nanaimo, B.C.) who hit the cross-bar in the 31st minute. Unfortunately the Spartans were unable to get on the board as the first half ended at 0-0.

Fraser Valley got on the board in the 64th minute by virtue of a free kick from just outside the top of the Spartans box. UCFV's Angela French scored her first goal of the season when she curled the ball round the outside of the Spartans wall and into the lower right corner of the net. TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (2nd year, Surrey, B.C.), who was defending the opposite side of the net, made a dive stab at the ball but it just eluded her grasp.

Trailing, the Spartans pushed hard to get the equalizer. It came in the 79th minute off of the right foot of defender Whitney Agassiz (Salmon Arm, B.C.). After a Spartan corner kick, Agassiz went high to get the header, but she was unable to pot the goal with her head. Then in the ensuing goal mouth scramble Agassiz found space and scored her second goal of the season by slotting ball the between the defenders and into the centre of the Cascades net.

"Whitney played extremely well and our back four were solid and did a great job of limiting UCFV's chances," said Roxburgh. I also thought that Dana DuMerton (3rd year, Abbotsford, B.C.) battled very well in the midfield and Christine Walker (2nd year, White Rock, B.C.) brought us to life with her physical dominance."

The Spartans continued to have strong runs into the Cascades box for the remainder of the half, but they were unable to find the go-ahead goal as the final whistle went with the two teams knotted at 1-1.

TWU's Veronika Rogina only had the one shot on goal, while UCFV's Angela Garriott made two saves in the draw.

The Spartans will now return home where they will await the Cascades for the rematch on Saturday, October 20. Match time at TWU is set for 5 p.m. The match will be the final home games for 5th years, Carlee O'Brien, Lindsay Rohla (Langley, B.C.), Erin-Marie Higgins (Surrey, B.C.), Brittany Heinrich (Kelowna, B.C.) and Whitney Agassiz.

Match Notes: The start of the match was delayed 90 minutes while the two teams waited for officials...The graduating 5th years are the remaining members of the Spartan 2004 CIS National Championship squad...The Spartans had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks...
