SPARTANS HEAD TO POST-SEASON WITH WIN
-TWU blanks Lethbridge in play-off preview

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team finished the Canada West conference play with a solid 2-0 win over the University of Lethbridge Sunday after noon at University Field in Lethbridge, Alta.

"It is a good way to finish the regular season. We new it was going to be a hard battle because Lethbridge is a good team and they gave us some challenges," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "But we played well corporately and had a great team effort."

The first half was an evenly played 45 minutes with both teams generating chances, but few of any quality. The Spartans had their first quality chance in the 30th minute with forward Carlee O'Brien (Nanaimo, BC, 5th) breaking free, only to be turned away by a diving save from Megan Lumley (Lethbridge, AB, 4th year). Nine minutes later, Spartan defender Whitney Agassiz (Salmon Arm, BC, 5th) put a diving header over the cross bar.

The Horns lone dangerous chance was caught by Spartan keeper Veronika Rogina (Surrey, BC, 2nd) after Horns striker Kelli Sauers (Calgary, AB, 3rd year) curled a shot in from the left flank.

The second half saw the field tilt in the Spartans favour, with chances starting in the opening minutes. Horns midfielder Andrea Nippard (Calgary, AB, 1st year) cleared a ball out of harms way deep in the Horns penalty area.

The Spartans first goal resulted from a misplayed ball by Lumley; Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary, AB, 2nd year) found herself all alone in front of a wide open net and made no mistake to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 51st minute.

Three minutes later O'Brien doubled the Spartan lead when she broke free from her mark for the second time, and beat Lumley as she came out to challenge.

The Spartans had a glorious chance to extend the lead to three late in the half, but Ferguson directed a shot wide of the open net.

Shots attempts favoured the Spartans 19-16 in the game but both teams registered five shots on goal.

The Horns fall to 5-4-5 with the loss and the Spartans improve to 9-3-2. Today's match was a preview of next week's Canada West play-offs. #4TWU and #5Lethbridge will play Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at UBC's Lett Field. The other quarter final has #3 Manitoba playing #6 Alberta. #1 UBC and #2 Victoria have first round bye's.
