TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS ADVANCE TO CANADA WEST SEMI-FINAL
-Carlee O'Brien's two goals leaves TWU one win away from trip to nationals

VANCOUVER - The Trinity Western Spartans will move on to the semi finals against the host Thunderbirds on Saturday after their 3-1 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday afternoon at UBC's Evelyn Lett Field.

Carlee O'Brien (Nanaimo, B.C.) was the story for the Spartans, as her two goals were enough to lift Trinity Western over Lethbridge. O'Brien opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, when she got the last touch on the ball during a scramble in front of the Pronghorns goal. She then picked up the eventual game winner in the 63rd, after she beat the Lethbridge offside trap and took off on a clear breakaway, eluding 'Horns keeper Megan Lumley and tapping the ball into the open net.

Andrea McLachlan (Maple Ridge, B.C.) added a third for the Spartans in the 74th minute, and Lethbridge's Kelli Sauers broke Veronika Rogina's (Surrey, B.C.) shutout in the 90th with a long distance strike.

"I thought we had a nervous start, and Lethbridge, to their credit, played very well," said Spartans Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "We knew they would. Once we scored a goal, we settled down and played a little better. In the end, I thought it was a just result. I thought we missed a few chances to bury them earlier which made it harder, but all credit to Lethbridge, they are a good team. "

The Spartans will now meet the UBC Thunderbirds in the semi finals.

"It's frustrating that two of the best teams in Canada West have to play each other in the semi finals," said Roxburgh. "It would have been good if we could have avoided each other, but they are a good team, so we'll see what happens."

The Spartans and 'Birds will face off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3.

Match Notes: the Pronghorns outshot the Spartans 15-12, but TWU had the edge in shots on goal with eight to Lethbridge's two...TWU was called for nine off-sides...the Spartans were 0-1-1 against the Thunderbirds this season...TWU defeated UBC 1-0 in last years Canada West Championship match in Regina...
