SPARTANS TOP T-BIRDS

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team defeated the University of British Columbia 1-0 Tuesday night in spring soccer action at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

"Any time you compete and play well against a team the calibre of UBC you have to be happy. They have so many talented players, so I am delighted that our young players were able to battle and compete," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "Both teams looked rusty tonight but it was a step in the right direction."

The Spartans Kayla Ungaro (Kelowna, B.C.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 49th minute of play. TWU forward Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) began the play with a cross over the top of the UBC back line to a charging Kayleen Davison (Maple Ridge, B.C.) Davison took a hard shot at the T-Birds keeper Krista Dewar (Vancouver). The rebound went wide to Ungaro, who slid the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

The Spartans keeper Veronika Rogina (Surrey, B.C.) made a few solid stops as the half was coming to a close to preserve the shut-out and the win for the Spartans.

The game featured many reserves for both teams as the two squads started up the spring season with an emphasis on the development of their younger players.

Next up for the Spartans is the Simon Fraser University Clan on Friday, March 14. Game time at TWU is set for 7 p.m.

TWU is proud hosts of the 2008 CIS women's soccer national championships. The championship tournament will be played in Langley, B.C. November 6-9.
