TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (1)

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team played unkind host's to the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday afternoon at Langley's MAP field. The Spartans controlled much of the play as they outshot the visitors from Saskatoon 15-6 on their way to a 3-1 non-conference victory.

Spartans forward Daniela Gerig (2nd year, Fort Langley, B.C.) got the opening goal in the 34th minute on a neat thru ball from Alexi Foster (1st year, forward, Fort Langley, B.C.). Gerig split the back two Saskatchewan defenders to go in alone on the Huskies Alicia Cartier (Prince Albert, Sask.). Gerig touched the ball around the charging keeper and rolled it into the open net to give TWU the 1-0 lead.

In the 43rd minute the Huskies Courtney Laverty (Saskatoon) nearly tied the match just before the half. Lavety picked up a loose ball in the Spartans' end and was able to split the right-side defenders to get open just inside the top of the box. The Saskatchewan defender took a solid shot that went high and hard off the TWU crossbar.

The Spartans made it a two goal lead eight minutes (53rd) into the second half, when Gerig got her second of the match. The goal came off of a scramble in the centre of the Huskies penalty area. Gerig picked up the ball just outside the Saskatchewan six and neatly chipped the ball over Cartier to make it 2-0 for TWU.

TWU's Foster got her first goal of the season in the 67th minute. She took a pass from midfielder Karina Whitmarsh (1st year, Langley, B.C.) and split the back right defenders before sliding the ball into the lower left corner of the Huskies net to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies got on the board in the 70th minute. A defensive breakdown allowed midfielder Jamie LeMay (Saskatoon) to go untouched down the right side of the Spartans side of the park. LeMay sent a nice ball to the centre of the box to a wide open Elizabeth Hudon (Prince Albert, Sask.). Hudon had plenty of time to put the ball overtop of TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Langley, B.C.) and into the top of the TWU net.

TWU's Rogina made one save to earn the victory, while Saskatchewan's Cartier made four saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency team on Sunday, August 31. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Langley's Municipal Athletic Park (MAP).

TWU opens Canada West conference play on Sept. 6 in Abbotsford, B.C. against the University of the Fraser Valley. The Spartans and TWU are proud hosts of the 2008 CIS Women's Soccer Championship to be held Nov. 6-9 at Trinity Western University.
