TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (1)

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University rookie Nikki Wright is making an early statement for Rookie of the Year honours. The Cloverdale, B.C. native had a great home opening weekend for the Spartans. She followed up her first goal of the year in a 1-1 tie with No. 4 UBC on Thursday with two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the visiting No. 7 ranked University of Victory Vikes. The win moves the Spartans to 1-0-2, while the loss drops the Vikes to 1-2-0.

"I'm delighted with the victory and the way we battled well and after a slow start. I'm proud of the way we picked it up and created some good chances, when we could have just been content to hold on," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Tonight was an important win for us. We are a really young team and this was a tough weekend, as some of our players have never played in this type of atmosphere before and to come out on the winning end is extra special."

Both teams had quality scoring chances throughout the highly entertaining and competitive match. The Spartans started slow but finished strong to earn their first victory. Victoria had the edge in total shots, outshooting TWU 12 to 10, but the Spartans had the edge in shots on goal at 9-7.

Wright opened the scoring in the 24th minute with her second goal of the season. The speedy forward took a through ball from midfielder Tessa Meyer (1st year, Surrey, B.C.) and split the left side of the Vikes defence. Victoria keeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, B.C.) came charging out but Wright was able to blast the ball past the Vikes keeper and into the centre of the open net.

Victoria tied the match ten minutes later (34th) on a goal by Moira Hood. Victoria' Kendra Flock juggled a loose ball in the centre of the Spartans box. She played the ball off neatly to an open Hood. The Victoria forward one time the ball hard past TWU's Veronika Rogina, who had no chance on the ball, and into the lower left corner of the TWU net to tie the score at 1-1. "I was disappointed that we gave away a goal late in the half," commented Roxburgh. "We are going to have to learn from that because good team are going to punish us and Victoria did."

Wright got the game winner for the Spartans in the 80th minute. Forward Daniela Gerig (2nd year, Fort Langley, B.C.) set Wright for her second of the match, when she battled for possession in the box. Wright took the ball and made a quick turn at the top of the box and hammered it into the right-side of the Victoria net.

"Nikki's goals were both very pretty goals and she is showing why she is such a lethal finisher. Tessa Meyer and Dana DuMerton (4th year, Abbotsford, B.C.) really gave us a great second half in the midfield, they both played well and once again our captain Dana had another standout performance," commented Roxbugh on a few of his key players.

Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Langley, B.C.) made six saves and played the full ninety for the Spartans to earn her first win of the season, Victoria's Parker made seven saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is a friendly against the Simon Fraser University Clan on Tues. Sept. 16. Match time at TWU is set for 7 p.m. They follow that with a Canada West match against the University of the Fraser Valley on Sat. Sept. 20. Match time at TWU is set for 5 p.m.

Match Notes: the two teams split the season series last year with TWU winning 2-0 at home on Sept. 29, while losing 1-0 in Victoria on Oct. 6. Victoria finished fourth at last years CIS Championship, losing 1-0 in PK to UBC...The Spartans have an automatic bid into this year's CIS Championship. TWU is the host of the Championship, which takes place Nov. 6-9 in Langley, B.C.
