TWU Spartans (4) at the University of Calgary Dinos (2)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT HALF-WAY POINT

CALGARY - Led by rookie forward Nikki Wright's (Cloverdale, B.C.) two goals the Trinity Western University women's soccer team remained undefeated in Canada West with a hard fought 4-2 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon in Calgary, Alta. The win moves the No. 9 ranked Spartans into fourth place in Canada West at 5-0-2, while the loss drops the Dinos into seventh place at 2-5-2.

"I'm delighted to get out of Calgary with a win. We were flat and we didn't have the same passion or bite that we have had and if it wasn't for our finishing we would have been in trouble today," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "All credit to Calgary they played very well and gave us some problems and forced us to battle and hang on for a very lucky win. But we got away with one and will take the three points make sure that we show up tomorrow."

The first half saw the two teams trade goals twice, as they went into the break deadlocked at 2-2.

The second half brought an entertaining battle, as both teams had plenty of opportunities throughout. A goal in the 59th minute from Alexi Foster (1st year, Fort Langley, B.C.) proved to be the difference for Trinity Western, as she put one behind a confused Calgary goalie Courtney Heffernan (3rd, Calgary). "I'm really pleased with Alexi," said Roxburgh. "She had a great game winning goal and her finish was excellent. I'm really proud with the way she came in and played a vital roll for us in the second half."

A late goal in the 89th minute from Wright iced it for Trinity Western. The goal came after the Spartans survived a couple of Dino corner kick's in a very tense environment as the home team pressed for the equalizer. Wright was able to get a loose ball and go 85 yards down the field, beat a defender and calmly chipped a ball from about 25 yards over a charging keeper. It was Wright's second goal of the match, as she previously scored on a spectacular diving header earlier in the first half. TWU's Rebecca Ferguson (3rd year, forward/midfield, Calgary) set up Wright when she took the ball down the right side and send a perfect ball to a waiting Wright. "Both of Nikki's goals were fantastic," commented Roxburgh. Her two goals today give her eight goals in seven games.

TWU's Melissa Mobilio (2nd year, Coquitlam, B.C.) gave the Spartans the early lead when she opened the scoring for the Spartans in the 12th minute.

Goal scorers for the Dinos were Katie McKilligan (3rd year, West Vancouver) and Tessa Miller (1st year, Calgary). Miller's goal late in the first half, which bounced in off the post after squeaking past Spartan goaltender Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary), was her third in three games.

Funk made seven saves, including six in the second half to record the win for the Spartans, while Heffernan made four saves in the loss.

On Sunday the Spartans will travel south to face-off against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Pronghorns are coming off of a 2-2 tie against the Cascades in Lethbridge.

Match Notes: The Dinos out-shot the Spartans 14-9, with a nine to eight edge in shots on goal... TWU had the edge in corner kicks at 6-5...TWU is 8-4-5 lifetime against Calgary. The Spartans last loss to the Dinos was nearly five years ago - 1-0 on Oct. 19, 2003 in Calgary...with two matches in hand TWU with 17 points trail first place Victoria (19) by two point and second place Manitoba and UBC (18) by one point...
