TWU Spartans (0) at the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS DROP SECOND OF THE SEASON

VANCOUVER - The No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University women's soccer team fell for the second time this weekend with a 1-0 loss to the No. 9 ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon at UBC. The loss drops the Spartans to 5-2-3 and in a tie for third place with Manitoba, while the win moves the Thunderbirds to 7-1-4 and keeps them with in striking distance of the first place and No. 3 ranked University of Victoria.

"The two losses made it a frustrating weekend. But we have to heal up and we have to recover. We also have to learn what it takes to execute and play with purpose and intensity," added TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

Kelly Isberg was the only player to find her name on the score sheet on Sunday, as she hit a fantastic volley shot past Spartans keeper Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary) off a cross from Carmen Lindsay from the side of the six yard box. Lindsay received the ball at the edge of the 18 after a UBC short corner. It was the tenth corner of the half for the ‘Birds who dominated the Spartans through the first 45, out shooting them 12-2 in the frame.

"I was frustrated that we gave up a goal when we did, but they were the better team for a large part of the first half," said Graham Roxburgh.

The Spartans' best scoring chance came in the 39th minute, when midfielder Melissa Mobilio (2nd year, Coquitlam, B.C.) beat the last T-Birds defender and was in on goal, but a charging Jackie Dunnett was able to disrupt her shot, forcing it to roll just a few feet wide of the empty net.

Neither team had many good scoring chances in the second half. The Spartans were not significantly better on the offensive end of the park, but they did show improvement in defensive end. "We had more life in the second half, while we didn't have a lot more chances, we did limit UBC's chances," said Roxburgh.

UBC outshot Trinity Western 21-6 and held a 17-2 advantage in corners.

Dunnett made just two saves to pick up the clean sheet. Funk made six saves for the Spartans.

Next weekend the T-Birds will host the Victoria Vikes in a battle of the top two teams in Canada West, whileTrinity Western will host Saskatchewan and Alberta.
