TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of Alberta Pandas (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS TWO FOR TWO ON WEEKEND

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University rookie midfielder Chantelle Whitehead (Surrey, B.C.) had a game winning goal and an assist in the Spartans 2-1 win over the visiting University of Alberta Pandas Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the No. 10 ranked Spartans into third place in Canada West at 7-2-3, while the loss drops the Pandas into fifth place at 4-4-3.

"Alberta made the game difficult for us despite being down a player and I'm relieved that after two tough games this weekend that we won and got our three points," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

Alberta's Elise Emmott (Edmonton) opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The goal came after a number of Spartan errors in their own end resulted in a corner kick for the Pandas. Alberta's Jacqueline Smith (Sherwood Park, Alta.) sent the ball into the box where a TWU player headed the ball to clear it off of the six yard line. The ball found its way to a wide-open Emmott. Emmott took the ball and quickly placed it into the top right corner of the Spartans net.

After the goal the Spartans started to get themselves organized which resulted in a number of runs into the Pandas end of the field. TWU midfielder Becca Ferguson (3rd year, Calgary) was able to get the equalizer for the Spartans in the 28th minute. Whitehead gave Ferguson a beautiful pass up the right side with allowed Ferguson to travel uncontested down the right side of the park. As Ferguson neared the Pandas penalty area teammate Daniela Gerig (2nd year, forward, Fort Langley, B.C.) headed towards the Alberta net looking for the cross. Gerig's movements seem to momentarily distract Alberta keeper Krista Gavin (Edmonton) as she looked and moved slightly towards Gerig. The movement was all Ferguson needed as she hammered a rising shot into the top nearside of the Pandas net for her first goal of the season.

After the goal Trinity Western continued to push into the Alberta end. In the 38th minute the match dramatically changed in favour of the Spartans. TWU's Nikki Wright (1st year, forward, Cloverdale, B.C.) was sent clean up the middle on a through ball from Dana DuMerton (4th year, midfielder, Abbotsford, B.C.). Wright took off after the ball and in alone on the Alberta net. Gavin came charging out and had a huge collision with Wright a few meters outside the top of the box. The collision resulted in Alberta's Gavin being red carded and sent off for the remainder of the match.

Alberta's Sabina Bullard (Edmonton), who replaced Gavin in the Pandas net, first responsibility was to defend the free kick by the Spartans. TWU's Ferguson faked the strike and Whitehead followed her with a blistering shot that hit the Alberta cross-bar and bounced down before spinning back out to DuMerton who headed it into the net. After the head official consulted with the line judge the goal was credited to Whitehead as the initial strike did cross the goal line before spinning back out of the net.

Despite being down a player the Pandas were strong in the second half. They had a two corner kicks and four shots on the Spartans net in the final 25 minutes, but TWU's Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary) was to make the spots to preserve the win for the Spartans.

Funk made four saves to record the win for the Spartans, while Gavin with two saves and Bullard with one save combined for three saves in the Pandas loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the final weekend of the regular season when the will travel to the prairies to face the University of Manitoba next Saturday in Winnipeg before heading to Regina to play the University of Regina in the final match of the season.

Match Notes: with win the Spartans clinch a spot in the Canada West play-offs which will be held Oct. 31 - Nov. 2 in Victoria at the first place University of Victoria. After the Canada West Championship TWU will return home to host the CIS women's soccer championship Nov. 6-9...
