FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LATE GOAL LIFTS SPARTANS OVER VIKINGS

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Trinity Western University forward/midfielder Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) scored in the dying minutes and added an assist to lift the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the NCAA Div. II Western Washington University Vikings in Friday night ‘s cross-border friendly in Bellingham, Wash.

"We had a sluggish start in the beginning, but I was really pleased with the way we played in the second half," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We grew in our composure and we were able to beat a very energetic team today."

The Spartans, who trailed 1-0 at the half, rallied with two second half markers to earn the victory.

TWU midfielder Kaleigh Henry (White Rock, B.C.) - pictured - tied the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute when, after a goal mouth scramble, she was able to convert a Ferguson corner kick to even the score.

The Spartans continued to play well down the stretch and were rewarded with Ferguson's game winner as time was winding down. After the Spartans had applied considerable pressure TWU earned a corner kick which Ferguson was able to bend in before the Western Washington keeper was able to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line.

TWU keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) earned the win for the Spartans. "Kristen made some very nice saves in the first half to keep us in the game against a very talented Western Washington squad," commented Roxburgh.

The win puts the Spartans 1-0-1 this season against the Vikings.

Next up for the 2008 CIS national champion Spartans is their final match of the 2009 Spring Season when they will battle Seattle Pacific University Saturday afternoon in Seattle. Game time against the NCAA Div. II national champion Falcons is set for 3 p.m.
