WOMEN’S SOCCER (PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY)
TWU SPARTANS (4) AT THE HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAINES AND FERGUSON LEAD SPARTANS IN FRIENDLY

FULLERTON, CALF.
– Trinity Western University rookie midfielder Caitlin Haines (New Westminster, B.C.) notched three assists, while fourth year forward  Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) added a goal and an assist to lead the Spartans women’s soccer team to a solid 4-1 win over the Hope International University Royals on a hot Tuesday afternoon in Fullerton, Calf.

“It was a good performance overall and I was pleased that everyone got to play in extremely hot conditions,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

The Spartans took full advantage of their set pieces in today’s match.

Ferguson used a corner kick to set up a header by defender Carla Breadon (Vancouver) to open the scoring for TWU in the 18th minute.

After holding a slim 1-0 lead at the half the Spartans broke things open in the final 45 minutes. Haines set up midfielder Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, B.C.) on another TWU corner in the 57th minute to give TWU a 2-0 lead when Santema headed the ball past the Royals Candy Bergst.

Eight minutes later Haines got her second assist on a pretty cross to Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.). Gerig found the back of the net to give TWU a comfortable 3-0 lead in the 65th minute.

Hope International made it interesting when Harmony Pruett dribbled by the Trinity Western defenders to score an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to make it 3-1 Spartans.

Ferguson sealed the match for the Spartans when she converted a Haines cross to make the final 4-1 in the 89th minute.

TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (Surrey, B.C.) played the full match and made one save to earn the victory. The Royals Bergst made one save on five shots in the loss.

The Spartans held the edge in play as they finished with a 10-3 advantage in total shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans will now head to Westmont College to battle the Gauchos on Aug. 27 before traveling to the University of the Redlands for a match on Aug. 30.

Trinity Western opens their Canada West conference play with three straight road games. They play Saskatchewan on Sept. 12, Alberta on Sept. 13 and British Columbia on Sept. 19. TWU’s home opener will be on Sept. 26 against British Columbia.

Since entering the CIS in 2002 the Spartans women's soccer program has rapidly become one of the premier programs in the CIS. They have won two national championships, in 2008 and 2004, and two Canada West championships, in 2006 and 2004, and have been in the national championship three of the last five years where they have accumulated a 7-1-1 record.
