TWU SPARTANS (1) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PANDAS (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS TAKE TWO ON PRAIRIE ROAD TRIP

EDMONTON
- Trinity Western University forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) scored the winner and keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) earned the shutout to lead the No. 1 Spartans to a 1-0 win over the University of Alberta Pandas Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton. The win moves the defending national champion Spartans to 2-0-0, while the loss keeps the Pandas winless at 0-2-0 after the opening weekend of play in Canada West.

“It was a good road win for us and kudos to our team for defending the pressure that Alberta put on us as they through everyone forward at the end of the match,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Natalie Boyd (Surrey, B.C.) was very instrumental in our defence as she was able to defend and cover every blade of grass on the park.”

The Pandas had the first quality chance of the afternoon when midfielder Elise Emmott (Edmonton) got a quick shot off in the third minute.  Unfortunately for Alberta the shot was met by the Spartans Funk, who deflected the shot up over the crossbar to keep the Pandas off the score board.

In the 13th minute the Spartans Wright would get the lone goal of the match. The goal came when rookie midfielder Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, B.C.) found Wright, who had broken free from her defender in the offensive zone. The 2008 Canada West Player of the Year moved around Alberta goalkeeper Sabina Bullard (Edmonton) and, while going to the turf, shot the ball towards the Pandas net. Alberta defender Veronique Mayer (Edmonton) made a valiant late charging effort to stop the shot from finding the back of the net but to no avail as Wright knotted her second game winning goal of the weekend.

The remainder of the first half was mostly spent in the Alberta end, especially a 12-minute stretch starting around the 30th minute where the Pandas were unable to get the ball past the center line.  The Spartans sent nine shots in total in the half in Bullard’s direction before Alberta took one last attempt before the half was over, with Mayer shooting a free kick just wide of the near post.

The start of the second half saw Trinity Western with the advantage in play early on as the Spartans outshot Alberta five to two. But as the half progressed the Pandas took more control. Over the remaining 22 minutes of the match Alberta outshot TWU nine to one, but the Spartans Funk and her teammates were able to keep the shots from finding the back of the net as TWU held on for the one goal victory.

Funk made two saves to earn her second win, while Bullard made three saves in the loss.

The Spartans will now take their perfect start west to Vancouver to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for their lone match of the weekend on Sat. Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. The Pandas meanwhile will look to find their first win of the young season next weekend when head out on the road to face the University of Manitoba Bisons and University of Regina Cougars.

Match Notes: The Pandas had the edge in overall shots, 16-15, but the Spartans had the edge in shots on net at four to two…TWU also had the edge in corner kicks five to three and off sides at five to one… TWU is 7-3-4 lifetime against Alberta…
