TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA COUGARS (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PERFECT SPARTANS SHUT-OUT COUGARS

REGINA
– The No. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans recorded a 3-0 victory over the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West women’s soccer game at the U of R Field. The win improves the Spartans to 5-0-0 in Canada West conference play, with the loss drops the Cougars to 1-6-0.

“I’m very pleased with today’s result. It was a good corporate win for us,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Playing in Regina is always very difficult and Regina defended well and were potentially very dangerous throughout the match.”

Midfielder Melissa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the way scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist for the Spartans, while keeper Veronika Rogina (Surrey, B.C.) made three saves to earn the clean sheet victory.

It was a tough start for Trinity Western as the Spartans and the Cougars were evenly matched for the majority of the first half as Regina outshot the Spartans six to five. But the second half was more in TWU favour as the Spartans outshot the Cougars nine to three. TWU also had the edge in corner kicks with seven to Regina’s four.

Mobilio opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when she tapped in a cross from forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the half. “Melissa was fantastic today, her movement and creativity was excellent,” commented Roxburgh.

The Spartans extended their lead to two in the 64th minute, as Alexi Foster (Fort Langley, B.C.) found the ball in the midst of a wild scramble following a corner from Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) to notch her first goal of the season.

The defending CIS champion Spartans finished off the scoring in the 85th minute when forward Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.) tucked a shot under Regina keeper Michelle Anderson from 15 yards out. Mobilio was credited with an assist on the goal, which was Gerig’s second of the year.

Anderson made five saves in net for the Cougars.

The Spartans will now travel to Winnipeg for a match against No. 8-ranked Manitoba (5-1-1) on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for noon at the University of Manitoba.

The Cougars will finish off their two-game home stand with a match against UBC (1-2-2). Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the U of R Field.

Match Notes:
The shutout is the third of the season for the Spartans…with today’s shutout TWU runs their shutout streak to 218 minutes…the Spartans have only given up one goal in the last four matches…TWU is 15-0 lifetime against Regina and have not given up a goal in nine games…
