Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western women’s soccer team opened its 2011-12 preseason schedule with a 3-1 win over Western Washington Thursday night at Rogers Park.

The Spartans got goals from Jessica King, Caitlin Haines and Jennifer Castillo as Trinity Western proved to be the superior squad on this night.

Trinity Western outshot Western Washington 15-8 and had 10-2 advantage in shots on target and if not for a couple of fine saves from Viking goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs, TWU could have even furthered the final gap.

“Once we got into the flow of the game I was really happy with how things went,” said Spartans assistant coach Erin O’Driscoll. “We had some rookies who came in who had some great life. Alessandra Oliverio and Sarah-Kim Bergeron came in and gave us some great minutes. They’re going to push a lot of players for playing time.

“We did a great job of attacking in numbers. I was really happy to see three, four, five or six players getting forward and creating a lot of opportunities. I think we were unfortunate not to get a couple more.”

Playing in their first game of the year and without four regulars – Daniela Gerig, Nikki Wright, Melissa Mobilio and and Nat Boyd – and two coaches – Graham Roxburgh and Neil Turner who are all with Team Canada at the FISU Games in China, the Spartans controlled the majority of the match and were deserved victors.

Right from the opening whistle, the Spartans controlled the majority of possession and looked the better side. Other than a near miss early in the game on a shot from Western Washington’s Anna Geldenhuys that went just wide left, the Spartans held the Vikings in check.

Trinity Western had the better of the chances in the early stages and was rewarded with a goal off the foot of King, her first in Spartans blue, in the 10th minute. After a Vikings turnover, King capitalized on an open look from the top of the left side of the box and buried it by chipping it up and over Arthurs.

The Spartans continued to push their agenda and nearly doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Jenna Di Nunzio had a chance from in tight on a shot from the right side of the net but a spry right handed stop from Arthurs deflected the ball clear.

In the second half, after a pair of quality in tight chances from both King and Bergeron, the Vikings equalized in the 59th minute when Katherine Miccile, working alone, cut in off the left wing and popped it over Spartans goalie Cara Santaga, who was making her first start with TWU, and into the net.

Despite the Vikings knotting the match, Trinity Western continued to maintain control of the match.

In the 76th minute, Haines gave the Spartans what would turn out to be the winning goal. After Nikki Byrnes sent King down the left side, the Liverpool product, similarly to her first goal, chipped it over substituted Vikings goalie Alyssa Beauchamp but this time it didn’t quite have the speed to beat a defender to the goal line. As the ball slowly rolled toward the net, Haines slid in and forced the ball to the back of net for the winner.

The Spartans added to their lead five minutes later when Jennifer Castillo connected with a header on an Alicia Tesan corner.

Trinity Western’s next game is Saturday, Aug. 20 at Seattle Pacific at 4:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Western Washington had two corner kicks to TWU’s one…TWU had 18 fouls to WWU’s eight…WWU’s Arthur made seven saves and TWU’s Santaga made one…WWU’s Joana Houplin (58’)and Kim Cooper (51’) each were shown yellow cards.
