SPARTANS SHUTOUT BY RIVAL UBC

LANGLEY, British Columbia. –
The Trinity Western women’s soccer team (No. 5 in CIS rankings) were shutout its home opener as the Spartans dropped their first regular season game of the Canada West season 1-0 to rival UBC (No. 6) Saturday at Rogers Park.

The Thunderbirds Rachel Sawer scored the only goal of the game when she ripped home a brilliant strike in the 65th minute that sailed over leaping TWU goalie Kristen Funk and deflected in off the crossbar, giving UBC all they would need for the win.

The loss forces Trinity Western to go into next week with a 0-1-0 record while UBC starts the year off 1-0-0.

“I just didn’t think we played very well,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “It took us until they scored before we really got going and had some intensity. Our back line was great but we couldn’t get much else happening. We had some chances late but couldn’t bury them. You have to give credit to their goalie but when you’re shooting the ball right at the keeper it’s hard to score.”

After the start of the game was forced back an hour because the officials were delayed, both teams got off to a sluggish start with neither earning much in the way of quality opportunites in the early going.

As the half progressed the Thunderbirds started to pick things up offensivley and by the break had outshot the Spartans 9-1, but only three of those shots were on target.

The best opportunity of the first 45 minutes went to Sawer who ripped a ball off the centre of the Spartans crossbar in the 14th  minute. The ball came down and TWU keeper Kristen Funk was able to cover the rebound before any UBC player was able to take advantage of the loose ball, but the opportunity seemed to be something of a foreshadowing of what was yet to come.

In the second half, it was more of the same as neither team seemed particulary intent on entertaining the fans as the game had the feeling of a “let’s play for a draw” kind of night.

That all changed in the 65th minute when Sawer’s blast gave UBC what the winning goal.

After that, the Spartans woke up and immediately started pushing the pace.

Trinity Western had 12 of their 14 shots in the final 25 minutes as they pressed for the equaliser. Spartans striker Daniela Gerig had quality chance in the 73rd minute but fired it, more or less, right at the Thunderbirds first-year keeper Alyssa Williamson. Less than 30 seconds later, Gerig had another opportunity but once again was stopped by Williamson.

The Thunderbirds goalie, who finished with nine saves and was the busier of the two goalies with Funk finishing with five stops, made a final added time save on first-year forward Sarah-Kim Bergeron, who cracked the opening night starting XI, and that was all the Thunderbirds needed to earn the victory.

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend as they host Manitoba Sept. 16 and Regina Sept. 17 with both games starting at 5:00 p.m. The Thunderbirds, meanwhile, will play Regina Sept. 16 and Manitoba Sept. 17 with both games starting at 5:00 p.m.

Game Notes: UBC outshot TWU 15-14 but TWU had nine shots on target compared to UBC’s six…UBC had 17 fouls to TWU’s 11…UBC had three corner kicks to TWU’s two…No cards were shown.
