No. 9 TWU Spartans (4) vs the University of Manitoba Bisons (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS RUN PAST BISONS FOR FIRST CANADA WEST WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by a strong team effort the No. 9 Trinity Western University women’s soccer team exploded for four second half goals as the Spartans defeated the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons 4-1 Friday night at TWU’s Rogers Park. The win moves the Spartans to 1-1-0 on the season, while the loss keeps the Bisons winless at 0-3-0.

The Spartans controlled the play for much of the match as they outshot the Bisons 19 to eight in total shots and 14 to five in shots on goal.

“I thought we possessed the ball a lot better and at times and, while Manitoba made it very difficult to break them down, I thought our discipline especially in the second half to keep it and draw them out was quite effective,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.  “The score line reflects that we probably won it easily but it wasn’t an easy game at all. I thought they defended very well. I thought they, at times, countered quite effectively and it was a tough game against a good team that is going to be a very good team in the future.”

Nikkii Wright nearly got the Spartans on the board in the first minute, but her header towards the open net was cleared off of the line by a Bison defender to keep the TWU squad of the board.

The Spartans had the majority of the possession and pressure during the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Bisons 10 to five. Their efforts were rewarded in the 34th minute when TWU’s Nikki Wright was fouled by Manitoba’s Gillian Sidon in the penalty area.

Trinity Western midfielder Melissa Mobilio, who had five first half shots, took the PK for the Spartans. Mobilio went to the left side of the net, but Manitoba keeper Chloe Werle anticipated the shot and got her hands on the ball and deflected it off to the side. Mobilio, who was moving after her shot, pounced on the rebound and fired it overtop of Werle to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.

TWU would go into the half with the 1-0 lead, but the home team would break it open in the second half.

The Spartans got their second of the night in the 56th minute. TWU’s Jenna Di Nunzio flicked the ball to the left of the box, where the Spartans Daniella Gerig took the pass and slotted it into the top of the Bisons net.

It did not take long for Manitoba to respond. Less than three minutes later the Bisons Carrie Nash made it a one goal game. The goal came off of a free kick in the Bisons defensive end of the park. Manitoba’s Sarah Haiko sent a long ball into the TWU penalty area. The Bisons Nash split the defenders and sent the ball over Spartans keeper Kristen Funk and into the back of the TWU net.

TWU regained their two goal lead in the 65th minute off of a pretty set piece. Spartans forward Alicia Tesan took the corner for the Spartans and sent the ball to the far left side of the six yard box. TWU midfielder Jenna Di Nunzio went high to find the ball and headed the ball to the top right side of the Manitoba net to make 3-1 for the Spartans with 25 minutes remaining in the match.

The Spartans fourth came in the 83rd minute off of the toe of midfielder Tessa Meyer. Di Nunzio once again did the work down the leftside to create the goal. Di Nunzio crossed the ball to the far side, where Meyer one timed the ball into the rightside of the Bisons net.

Kristen Funk made four saves to earn the win for the Spartans, while Chloe Werle made nine saves in the Bisons loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Regina Cougars tomorrow afternoon. Match time at Rogers Park is set for 5 p.m., while the Bisons will head to Point Grey to battle the UBC Thunderbirds tomorrow afternoon.

Match Notes: TWU finished with nine corner kicks to Manitoba’s one…the Spartans had three offside, while the Bisons had one…Manitoba keeper Werle was named Bison player of the match, while TWU’s  Melissa Mobilio earned the honours for the Spartans…
