NO. 8 TWU SPARTANS (1) AT THE NO. 3 UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PANDAS (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WEBBER’S PK, FUNKS SHUT-OUT HELPS SPARTANS STOP NO. 3 PANDAS

EDMONTON
– Trinity Western University third year defender Colleen Webber scored on a penalty kick in the 51st minute to lead the No. 8 Spartans to a 1-0 win over the No. 3 University of Alberta Pandas Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton. The victory improves the Spartans to 3-1-0 and extends their winning streak to three matches, while the loss drops the Pandas to 4-1-0 and ends their four match winning streak.

“Edmonton is always a difficult place to play as Alberta always plays well here and today was no different as it was a tight game and Alberta was very dangerous,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. ”I was pleased that we responded in the second half to a challenge to play with more tempo and speed and were able to come away with the win in a good game where we had lots of minutes for key players.”

TW keeper Kristen Funk had a fine performance as she made nine saves to earn her second shutout victory of the season, while Alberta’s Kelti Biggs made three saves in the loss. Alberta finished the night with 13 total shots, while Trinity Western finished with 12. Funk has only given up two goals in her first four matches and her continuous shutout streak currently sits at 211 minutes.Bigss has now given up two goals in her three matches played.

“Funk was the player of the game by far as she made a couple of great game winning saves after Alberta responded to our goal. I’m so pleased for her she has worked hard to come back from her injury and she is on top of her game now, which we are very excited about,” commented Roxburgh.

After a scoreless first half the lone goal came about from the hard work of TWU forward Nikki Wright. Wright who was in the penalty area getting ready to take a cross when she was taken down by the Alberta defenders to force the penalty kick. On the PK Pandas keeper Biggs guessed to her left, but Webber went low to her bottom left to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes after Webber’s goal, 53rd, Wright was on the attack again, but her hard shot went off of the goal post to keep it a one goal match.

The Spartans rookie forward Sarah-Kim Bergeron had another chance to get the insurance goal in the 55th minute. Bergeron, who made a great move to get around Biggs to find herself alone in the Alberta penalty area, but from the tight angle she was unable to find the twine as her shot went wide.

Down the stretch the Pandas put a lot of pressure on the Spartans back line, but TWU and Funk were able to withstand the attack  and preserve the one goal road victory.

The Spartans will now get on the bus for a Sunday afternoon match with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Match time in Saskatoon is set for noon MST. While Alberta will host the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds, who tied the Huskies 0-0 today, tomorrow afternoon at noon in Edmonton.

Match Notes: Roxburgh also commented on the “Our ability to defend an fine play from or our defenders Jillian Dietrich and Webber” in keeping Alberta off of the scoreboard…
