Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
Trinity Western’s Nikki Wright scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute as the No. 4 ranked Spartans knocked off Victoria 2-1 to earn their seventh win in a row Friday night at Rogers Park.

After the Spartans had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jennifer Castillo in the 67th minute and the Vikes responded in the 84th minute with an equalizing goal off the foot of second half substitute Emma Greig, the game looked fit to be tied.

But with the final minutes ticking off the clock, Wright found herself wide open in the box, thanks to a miscue from a couple of Victoria defenders, and blasted her attempt to the top right corner past leaping Vikes goalkeeper Stephanie Parker.

The win improves the Spartans record to 7-1-0 on the year while the loss drops Victoria to 4-3-2. With the victory, Trinity Western moves into sole possession of first place in Canada West, two points ahead of second place UBC and seven points clear of the fifth place Vikes.

“I’m pretty pleased that we won,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “Obviously it’s a huge sigh of relief to come away with three points after we gave away what I thought was a pretty sloppy goal.

“It was a game of two halves. I thought individually in the first half we worked hard but we didn’t play very smart. It didn’t seem like we passed the ball with any sense of purpose. I felt we were a bit passive and got stuck in a rut for a little while.

“In the second half I thought we controlled the tempo. We passed better and we found some space and it was good to get on the end of a couple crosses and then that scramble that Nikki finished certainly puts us in a better spot than had we come away with a tie.”

Despite a less than stellar first half from the home side, it was indeed the Spartans with the greater possession numbers and the better chances in the early stages of Friday’s match.

The Spartans best chance of the first half came in the 23rd minute when Daniela Gerig was sent in alone on the Vikes Parker off of a perfectly-timed through ball. Gerig stepped to her left and beat Parker to the outside but, despite an open net, was unable to bury the opportunity as her attempt on goal was stopped by a scrambling Victoria defender right on the goal line.

The Vikes Lindsay Hoetzel was particularly dangerous in the first half as she had four shots by halftime, but unfortunately for Victoria all four went up and over the Spartans woodwork.

The teams went into the break scoreless but with the Spartans having four shots on target compared to Victoria’s one and in possession of a good portion of the game’s momentum.

In the second half, Trinity Western came out a much more determined side and had a decided edge in possession early on.

Second half substitute Sarah-Kim Bergeron nearly opened the scoring in the 49th minute when she had an open shot on net from inside the box but was stymied by Parker.

Trinity Western finally broke through in the 67th minute when Castillo scored her fourth goal of the season, heading home a corner kick from Natalie Boyd.

As the game closed in on the final 15 minutes, the Vikes started to push back and were rewarded with Greig’s goal on a loose ball scramble the Vikes striker ripped past Trinity Western keeper Kristen Funk in the 84th minute.

But not to be denied their seventh victory of the campaign, Wright, who came on late in the first half, scored her second goal of the year to give Trinity Western the win.

The Spartans will now play Fraser Valley Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Rogers Park while Victoria will travel west to play UBC at 5:00 p.m.

Game Notes: The Spartans outshot Victoria 15-9 and had 10 shots on target compared to the Vikes three…Victoria’s Parker made eight saves while Funk finished with two stops…TWU had five corners while Victoria had three.
