Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The No. 2 Trinity Western women’s soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to ten games with solid 2-0 victory over the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at TWU’s Rogers Park in Langley, B.C.

The Spartans used a 29 to three shot advantage and two penalty kick goals, from midfielder Melissa Mobilio and midfielder Natalie Boyd, to earn their ninth win of the season and improve to 9-1-1 and remain at the top of the Canada West table, while the loss drops the fifth place Huskies to 5-4-2.

“We’re pleased that we started well and played well in terms of attacking and we generated three or four chances,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “I was really impressed with Melissa. She really dictated the pace of play early on.”

“We passed really well for the first 25 minutes. I thought we got a little bit sloppy and after that and maybe the game got a little disjointed but it was good to get lots of players lots of minutes tonight,” added Roxburgh. “We shut down their forward [Elizabeth Hudon], a player who has generated lots of goals this year.  I thought we dealt with any threats they had with relative ease but we just missed a bit in the attacking third and we were a little bit missing in terms of the right run or the right decision going forward. We have lots of work still to do.”

TWU’s Kristen Funk made the one save to record the shut-out victory for the Spartans, while Saskatchewan’s Marissa Wilford was impressive as she made 17 saves to keep the Huskies in the match for the full 90 minutes.

From the start the Spartans controlled possession and the flow of play. TWU opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a penalty kick by midfielder Melissa Mobilio. TWU was awarded the penalty after forward Jenna Di Nunzio was taken down from behind by while playing the ball in the Saskatchewan penalty area. Mobilio went high left off of the outstretched hands of the Huskies Wilford to put TWU up 1-0.

TWU made it a two goal margin in the 26th minute, and once again it was on a PK. This time TWU midfielder Natalie Boyd took the shot. The PK was awarded to the Spartans after the fine work of TWU forward Daniela Gerig. Gerig was able to maneuver her way past two Saskatchewan defenders to go in on the Huskies net. But before she could get her shot off she was taken down from behind and awarded the PK. Boyd went to the near identical spot as the previous PK with the same result to give TWU the 2-0 lead midway through the opening frame.

The Spartans would finish the half with a 12 to two overall shot advantage and a nine to zero edge in shots on goal. The Huskies Wilford was in fine form as she made seven saves to keep Saskatchewan in the opening frame.

Trinity Western came out strong to start the final frame. The Spartans quickly put tons of pressure on the Huskies defenders and keeper Wilford. But the Huskies did not break as the kept the Spartans from getting to within one goal.

Midway through the final frame Saskatchewan’s Elizabeth Hudon found open space just outside the top of the Spartan box. She made a long crack at the TWU goal, but the ball just sailed wide of the top right corner to the Spartans net.

Moments later TWU’s Jessica King went in alone and was robbed with a diving stop by Wilford. Then in the 85th minute Daniela Gerig once again beat two Huskies defenders go in alone on the Saskatchewan net, but Wilford was once again up to the task.

The Huskies best chance of the night came off of the foot of Saskatchewan’s Brooklyn Leier. Leier got open in the centre of the TWU end and sent a shot towards the top left corner of the Spartans net, but TWU’s Kristen Funk was there to make the two handed save.

Despite numerous opportunities the Spartans were unable to find the back of the Huskies net in the second frame as the contest ended 2-0 in favour of the home team.

Next up for the Spartans is the No. 6 University of Alberta Pandas, while the Huskies will head to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds. Match time kick-off at TWU’s Rogers Park is set for 5 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU had an 11 to one edge in corner kicks…the Spartans were also called for 10 offsides, while the Huskies had none…the shutout was Funk’s sixth of the season…in the Spartans 2009 championship season the Spartans had 11 shutouts…TWU defeated Saskatchewan by the identical 2-0 score on Sept. 25 in Saskatoon… The 8-3-0 Pandas are currently four points, 28-24, behind the first place Spartans…
