 NO. 2 TRINITY WESTERN (2) VS NO. 9 ALBERTA (1) – 4-3 PK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CANADA WEST CHAMPIONSHIP GOES TO SPARTANS IN SHOOTOUT

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Led by forward Daniela Gerig and keeper Kristen Funk the No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans defeated the No. 9 University of Alberta Pandas 2-1 (4-3 pk) in the Canada West championship match Saturday night at Rogers Park on the campus of TWU.

Gerig was the player of the match with goal in regulation and the shootout winner, while Funk made four saves in regulation and two in the shootout to lead the Spartans to their fourth Canada West Championship (2004,06,09,11).

“I’m overjoyed and excited with the win. It is nice being back as Canada West champions,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “It was two very good teams and it was tight all the way. In the second half we had a little better chances, but credit to Alberta they defended well, they were dangerous and I thought their whole team played very well tonight. We persevered and hung there, even in the shootout we persevered and Funk came up with the big save like she always does.”

The two teams will now head to the 2011 CIS championships, which will run Nov 10-13 at McGill University in Montreal. TWU will go in as the Canada West number one seed, while Alberta will go in as the Canada West number two seed. It will be the Spartans third championship appearance in four years having back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009. Alberta will be making its first appearance since 2002. The Pandas last CIS title was in 2001.

The Spartans would finish the match outshooting the Pandas 24-14 as Alberta’s Kelti Biggs made 11 saves to keep the Pandas in the match.

TWU’s Melissa Mobilio had a great opportunity early on when she got in alone by the Alberta six. She got past Alberta’s Biggs, but had too much of an angle to cut the ball in and missed wide of the post.

The Pandas opened the scoring in the 14th minute off of a goal by midfielder Amanda Black. Carleigh Miller set the play up when she headed a ball down in the TWU penalty area. Black was the first player to the ball and hit it high into the top left corner.

The Spartans got the equalizer in the 38th minute. Mobilio sent a ball out wide to Nikki Wright who did the hard work up the leftside of the pitch. She went around the Alberta left back and sent the ball across the six to a charging Daniela Gerig. Gerig hit the ball into the lower left corner to tie the match at 1-1.

Both teams would threaten over the remainder of the half, but neither would find the back of the net as they went into the half knotted at 1-1.

Trinity Western finished the half with an eight to seven edge in shots and a four to nil edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans looked like they had gone ahead in the match when Gerig found the back of the net with a header in the 54th minute, but it was the second header in the play and Gerig was offside on the play so the goal was disallowed.

TWU continued to gather strength as the half progressed. But at the end of the second 45 the game was still tied at 1-1 even though the Spartans held a 13-5 edge in shots in the second half.

In the overtime session the Spartans continued to maintain most of the play, but the Pandas played a very structured and disciplined defence to keep TWU from getting a go ahead goal and the match would go to a shootout to determine the Canada West champion.

As shootouts go the pressure was a little less as both teams were going to nationals already. But regardless it did not lack for excitement. Alberta quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the Pandas Heather Lund scored and the Spartans Jennifer Castillo hit the crossbar. Both teams, Darcie Kutryk and Natalie Boyd, hit their next shots. Then on the third shots TWU keeper Kristen Funk made a diving save to stop Alberta’s Carleigh Miller, while the Spartans Colleen Webber hit her shot to tie it at 2-2. It remained tied at 3-3 after the fourth shots with Annalise Schellenberg and Alexi Foster scoring.  Then on the fifth and potentially final shot Funk came up big again as she dove to her right to stop Alberta’s Amanda Black to give TWU a chance to win on their shot. The Spartans Daniela Gerig made no mistake as she slotted the ball past Biggs to give TWU the championship.

Match Notes: Alberta defeated TWU 2-1 in the 2001 Canada West championship to be the lone Canada West representative at the CIS championship. It was the Spartans first year in Canada West…Both TWU and Alberta have won three national crowns…It was the final match at Rogers Park for TWU’s Melissa Mobilio, Daniela Gerig and Alexi Foster… “I’m really pleased for them. It is not a bad way for them to finish their career here,” commented Roxburgh on his graduating players.
