SPARTANS OPEN 2012 WITH PRE-SEASON WIN

KIRKLAND, Washington – The defending Canada West champion Spartans opened the 2012 preseason with an impressive 4-0 win over the Northwest University Eagles Monday afternoon in Kirkland, Wash.

The Spartans midfielder Natalie Boyd got the first goal of the season to put TWU up 1-0 in the 24th minute of play. The goal would be the only marker of the first 45 as the Spartans led the Eagles 1-0 at the break.

Trinity Western rookie forward Krista Gommeringer got her first goal as a Spartan one minute into the second frame as she converted a nice pass from midfielder Jessica King.

The visitors from Langley, BC broke the game open when rookie midfielder Stephanie Chin scored in the 70th minute off of a give and go with Isabella Di Trocchio to put TWU up 3-0. Five minutes later, 75th minute, Spartan forward Rachel Antoniuk completed the scoring on the day when from in close she slotted the ball inside the right post to make the final 4-0.

TWU’s Bailey Williams and Cara Santaga split the goal keeping duties to earn the shut victory for the Spartans.

The Spartans will continue their preseason USA tour tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when they will travel to Portland, Oregon to take on NCAA Div. I Portland State. The Spartans open Canada West conference play on Friday, September 7 when they will host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time at Rogers Field is at 5 p.m.
