SPARTANS FALL TO AZUSA

AZUSA, California – Azusa Pacific University used a goal in each half to defeat the Trinity Western University Spartans 2-0 in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon in Azusa, Calif.

“I was disappointed in our overall performance in the second half we had a number of players who were ‘passengers’,” commented head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Natalie Boyd, Caitlin Haines and our back four played very well. But we have a lot of players right now who need to commit to playing to the level and intensity that we need.”

The match was a good evenly played game until the 30th minute mark, when a number of Spartan breakdowns resulted in a goalmouth scramble and the Cougars getting the ball past TWU keeper Kristen Funk.

The Spartans had two or three good opportunities to get something going in first half, but were unable to get any finish as they would end the first 45 trailing 1-0.

TWU was not effective for much of the second half. Then with the Spartans pushing and starting to get some flow Azusa was able to get the insurance goal in the 87th minute to seal the match.

The Spartans Funk played the full match in the loss.

The Spartans will return home after Monday’s match with California Baptist for a scrimmage with UBC Okanagan on Thursday, August 30 at 5 p.m. and then they will play a non-conference match against the University of Victoria Vikes on Friday, August 31 at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at Rogers Field on the campus of Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

TWU opens Canada West conference play on Friday, September 7 when they will host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time at Rogers Field is at 5 p.m.
