SPARTANS AND LANCERS DRAW IN CALIFORNIA

RIVERSIDE, California – Trinity Western University midfielder Jenna Di Nunzio scored twice as the Spartans tied the California Baptist University Lancers 2-2 Monday afternoon in Riverside, Calif. The tie puts the Spartans preseason record at 2-3-1.

“There were lots of positives in our performance. I was pleased with the way we started after our poor performance in our last match. We had good energy and passing movement and created some dangerous opportunities,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “We had a number of good performances all-around and it was good to get all our players into the match.”

Di Nunzio started the Spartans off with a bang when she whipped in a cross in the second minute of action that was redirected to put the visitors from Langley, B.C. up 1-0.

Less than 10 minutes later Di Nunzio was at it again when she made a nice move to her left to finish off a great goal with a left-footed rocket into the top corner to put TWU up 2-0 in the 12th minute.

A defensive breakdown in the midfield gave the Lancers a chance to pull within one goal after the ball banged off a few players to catch TWU keeper Kristen Funk wrong footed late in the opening 45. The Spartans would go into the break with the 2-1 lead.

An aggressive Lancers squad took advantage of a slow start by the Spartans in the second half and a breakdown and giveaway in the midfielder resulted in a breakaway for the Cal Baptist to tie the match at 2-2 early in the second frame.

The two squads would trade opportunities as time wound down, but neither would find the mark as the final ended at 2-2.

Kristen Funk and Bailey Williams each played 45 minutes to split the goal keeping duties for the Spartans.

The Spartans will return home for a scrimmage with UBC Okanagan at 5 p.m. on August 30 and then they will play a non-conference match against the Victoria Vikes on Friday, August 31 at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at Rogers Field on the campus of Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

TWU opens Canada West conference play on Friday, September 7 when they will host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time at Rogers Field is at 5 p.m.
