SPARTANS FALL TO VIKES IN FINAL PRESEASON TILT

LANGLEY, British Columbia – In the their final preseason game of the year and only one against Canada West competition, the Trinity Western women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Victoria Friday afternoon at Rogers Field.

With goals from Nathalie Scharf, Allie Wiebe and Lindsay Hoetzel, the Vikes captured a well-earned win in what was a largely Victoria-dominated match that saw the visitors outshoot Trinity Western 13-4 and put nine shots on target to the Spartans one.

For the Spartans, the loss sees them finish their preseason with a 2-4-1 record.

“On one level I was pleased that we could get some minutes for some players who haven’t played as much this preseason but on the other hand it’s still disappointing that we didn’t have more fight because we’re playing against a team that is very good and we respect,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “I just thought they wanted it more than we did today.

“However, despite not seeing the type of enthusiasm and energy we could have had, I think we saw some good things from a couple of rookies who probably played their way into the top 18.”

The Vikes got off to a quick start in the opening few minutes and were the aggressors throughout the first half, maintaining much of the early possession and garnering the only quality scoring chances of the half.

In the 15th minute, the Vikes were rewarded for their efforts when Scharf buried an in-tight ball past Spartans keeper Bailey Williams-Kapels. Following a scramble in the box, Scharf was the first one to find the ball and made no mistake in converting her opportunity.

Victoria continued to push the pace and in the 30th minute doubled its lead with a Wiebe tally. The Vikes midfielder took a clean pass through the Spartans defence and broke in alone on Williams-Kapels. While the Trinity Western keeper stopped Wiebe’s first shot on a diving save from, Wiebe collected the rebound and finished, slotting the ball home to the low left corner.

In the second half, the Spartans came out with more energy and garnered more of the possession but were ultimately unable to develop much in the way of quality chances.

Instead, it was Victoria adding to its lead in the 71st minute when Lindsay Hoetzel sped down the left side, beat the Spartans defender, outwaited Bailey-Kapels and sliced it home to the short side to round out the game’s scoring.

Spartans goalie Williams-Kapels finished with six saves while Vikes goalie Stephanie Parker was good on the only shot she faced.

The Spartans will now open their Canada West regular season Sept. 7 against Lethbridge at Rogers Field.

Notes – Trinity Western will scrimmage against Langara College Tuesday at Rogers Field at 7:00 p.m…the Spartans committed 14 fouls to the Vikes seven.
