Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia – With an impressive top to tail complete team effort, the No. 3 Trinity Western women's soccer team remained perfect in its Canada West season with a 3-0 win over No. 8 UBC at Rogers Field Saturday.

In both teams’ lone game of the weekend, the Spartans got goals from Natalie Boyd (Surrey, B.C.), Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) and Colleen Webber (Calgary) as they put together yet another impressive outing in this young season and have now scored 15 goals in the first three games of the year.

The Thunderbirds, who came into the game having scored nine goals in their previous two games combined, were stymied time and again by an impressive Trinity Western back line and when UBC did get its scoring opportunities, Spartans goalkeeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) was always there to make the stop as she posted her second clean sheet of the season.

The win marks the first time the Spartans have beaten UBC at Rogers Field since 2009 and also earns Trinity Western a bit of retribution after UBC was the lone team to take points off them all of last year.

With the win, Trinity Western moves to 3-0-0 on the season while the loss drops UBC to 2-1-0.

"I'm really pleased because they're a good team and obviously it's a great rivalry," said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. "I thought both teams started with some jitters but we settled down after about 10 minutes and started moving the ball and I was really pleased with our ball possession. I thought we were full value tonight. It's a good step forward for us and I'm happy we took our chances.

“Our passing was excellent tonight. I thought our midfield settled down and we were all firing tonight. We'll take it as a good step forward. We have lots of work to do, but you can't fault our kids. They were excellent tonight. We knew tonight was a big game and we responded.”

The Spartans, who were playing with midfielder Vanessa Kovacs for the first time this season after she missed their opening weekend, were the better team early in the first half and after a couple of brilliant opportunities - most notably from the foot of Boyd in the 9th minute when her point-blank attempt from 12 yards out was stopped by UBC goalie Alyssa Williamson (Langley) - Trinity Western was finally rewarded for their pressure-mounting efforts.

In the 24th minute, the Spartans Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, B.C.) broke down the left wing, beat her defender and slipped a low pass into the middle of the six-yard box that found an unmarked Boyd just feet from the goal line. The Trinity Western midfielder easily converted her first of the season into a gaping net.

With a 1-0 lead, Trinity Western pushed for more offence and 13 minutes later Gommeringer notched her fifth goal of the season to double the Spartans advantage. Trinity Western’s leading striker, just inside the six-yard box, took a pass from Jilian Dietrich (Calgary) off the right flank and whipped a shot to the top corner that beat Williamson clean.

The Thunderbirds applied pressure late in the first half but ultimately were unable to get a shot on target in the entire first half.

In the second half, it was more of the same as Trinity Western continued to maintain possession and earn quality attempts on goal.

In the 65th minute, the Spartans potted their third goal of the game when Webber ripped a brilliant quickly-taken free kick from beyond 40 yards to the top left corner that deflected off the fingertips of Williamson and into the back of the net for the centre-back’s first marker of the season.

Like the first half, the Thunderbirds provided some late pressure on the Spartans goal but were left unrewarded.

The best chance of the game for UBC came in the 89th minute when, after Funk punched an initial shot clear, Thunderbirds striker Rachael Sawer had a clear-cut chance from 15 yards out that the Spartans goalie was forced to make a diving save on to preserve the shutout.

Funk made three saves for the win while Williamson made three saves on six shots in the loss.

The Spartans will now head out on the road for games in Manitoba Sept. 22 and Winnipeg Sept. 23 while UBC will take the same road trip in reverse order.

Notes – TWU had 15 total shots to UBC’s seven…TWU had six shots on goal to UBC’s three.
