Game Recap

WINNIPEG – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-0 win over the University of Manitoba Bisons Saturday afternoon at the UofM turf fields in Winnipeg.

The win moves the No. 3 ranked Spartans to 4-0-0 in Canada West conference play, while the loss drops the Bisons to 2-3-0 and gives them three straight losses.
“I’m pleased with the result today, Manitoba is a tough place to play and they played well to start the game, they were aggressive and made things hard for us,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Our second goal really changed the flow of the game and allowed us to take control.”

TWU rookie forward Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with her sixth goal of the season, to put the Spartans up 1-0. Gommeringer got in behind the Bisons’ back four and was able to go in alone on Manitoba’s Chloe Werle (Winnipeg).

A few minutes later, in the 15th minute, Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) took a through ball from Gommeringer to get into open space where she got on the end of it to put the Spartans up 2-0.

“We had a number of strong performances today,” said Roxburgh. “Krista’s movement and ability to link with her teammates was excellent and Alicia Tesan was very lively and was unlucky not to have gotten another goal.”

“I was also pleased with the energy and ball movement that Tessa Meyer (Surrey, B.C.) brought to the field today,” added Roxburgh.

The second goal of the match changed the flow of the game from an even affair to one ruled by the visitors from Langley, B.C. With their increased energy the Spartans would score two more times to end the first half with a 4-0 lead.

Tesan got her second point of the match when she curled a corner kick into the Bisons box, where Spartan defender Jennifer Castillo (Surrey, B.C.) beat out the Manitoba players to head the ball into the back of the net to give TWU a 3-0 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the opening frame.

TWU second year defender Vanessa Kovacs got her first goal as a Spartan to round out the first half scoring. Nikki Bryne (Langley, B.C.) started the play up the side where she found Gommeringer, who then sent the ball to Kovacs at the edge of the box. Kovacs one-timed the ball into the top corner of the Bisons net to put the defending Canada West champions up 4-0 with just over one minute remaining in the half.

The second half saw both teams used their benches with few goal scoring chances developing. Bisons goalkeeper Martina Arran, who came in at the half, was challenged during the final 45 minutes and was able to stave off the Spartans off two times in the final 15 minutes to keep TWU from adding to their lead.

TWU’s keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) made five saves and played the full match to record her third shutout win of the season, fourth win in CW, while the Bison’s Chloe Werle and Martina Arran split the match for Manitoba.

The Spartans will now head across town for a match with the University of Winnipeg Sunday afternoon at noon at Memorial Soccer Field, while the Bisons will host the UBC Thunderbirds.

Match Notes: TWU’s Gommeringer, with a two point game, now has eight points to lead Canada West conference play…the Spartans have given up one goal in three games, while outscoring their opponents 19-1…TWU had the edge on Manitoba in shots (17-7) and shots on goal (14-4)…
