Game Recap

WINNIPEG – The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University women’s soccer team made it a six point weekend with a 6-0 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon at Memorial Soccer Field in Winnipeg. The win moves the Spartans to 5-0-0 and top spot in Canada West, while the loss drops the Wesmen to 0-5-1.

“Anytime you go on the road and win in tricking conditions it is a good thing,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Tessa Meyer played extremely well today and Krista Gommeringer was solid throughout the match.”

The victory also keeps the Spartans perfect on the season and extends their Canada West conference match winning streak to nine games and their unbeaten streak to 18 games. The last time TWU lost a Canada West conference match was Sept. 10, 2011 when they lost 1-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds in last season’s home opener.

The defending Canada West champions controlled the game from the start as they outshot Winnipeg 25-3 in total shots and 17-3 in shots on net. TWU fifth year keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) made three saves to extend her shutout streak to 295 minutes over four games, while Winnipeg’s Kim Gudmandson made 11 stops in the Wesmen loss.

It took the Spartans until the 33rd minute to find the back of the Wesmen net when third year midfielder Jessica King (Liverpool, Eng) gave the visitors the 1-0 lead. Fourth year midfielder Tessa Meyer (Surrey, BC) followed the goal up four minutes later with two goals in two minutes, 37th, 39th, to break the game open and give the Spartans a 3-0 lead after the first half.

TWU rookie forward Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) kept her consecutive Canada West game scoring streak alive with a goal in the 67th minute. Gommeringer has now scored in each of her first five Canada West conference matches. Fellow rookie midfielder Stephanie Chin (Calgary) followed up with her first Canada West goal three minutes later to put TWU up 5-0 with 21 minutes remaining in the match.

TWU fourth year forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) got her second goal of the season in the 88th minute to make the final 6-0 for the Spartans.

The Spartans will now head home for tough matches against the No. 8 ranked University of Regina (4-0-0) and the University of Saskatchewan (3-1-0). Match times on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 are set for 5 p.m. PDT at TWU’s Rogers Field.

Match Notes: Since the start of the 2009 season the Spartans are 37-6-4 in Canada West Conference play…Funk’s shutout streak and TWU record is 422 minutes, which she set last season… the five straight wins to open CW ties the TWU record set in 2010…the Spartans rookie consecutive goal scoring record is held by Nikki Wright who scored goals in each of her first seven Canada West games, a total of nine goals on her way to CIS Rookie of the Year honours in 2008…Gommeringer had one goal and three assists in today’s match to give her two goals and five assists on the weekend…
