TRINITY WESTERN (3) VS REGINA (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS STREAKS CONTINUE – COUGARS STOPPED

LANGLEY, British Columbia – In a battle of unbeaten teams the No. 2 Trinity Western University women’s soccer team defeated the visiting No. 9 University of Regina Cougars 3-0  Friday night at Rogers Field on the TWU campus in Langley, B.C. The win keeps the Spartans unbeaten in Canada West at 6-0-0, while the loss drops the Cougars to 4-1-0.

“Regina deserves full credit. They played with lots of energy. We won 3-0 but Regina was a little unlucky that it was not a closer match,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

The victory also extends the Spartans Canada West conference unbeaten streak to 19 games, 18-0-1, and keeps TWU perfect over Regina at 19-0-0 lifetime.

The Spartans and fifth year keeper Kristen Funk also extended their shutout streak to 385 minutes over five matches. In the loss the Cougars also gave up their first goals of the season to stop their shutout streak at 378 minutes.

“I’m pleased for the Krista and the team that we didn’t give up a goal. We didn’t play our best, but anytime you win and don’t play your best it is a good thing. We are happy with the win, but we know that we have lots to work on,” said Roxburgh.

The Spartans Nikki Byrne opened the scoring in the 18th minute of play. The fifth year defender picked up a loose ball between the centre line and the top of the Regina box. Byrne sent a perfectly placed ball towards the far right Regina post. The ball went over Regina’s Stephanie Possberg and under the crossbar to put TWU up 1-0.

The goal would be the only marker in strong defensive half by the Cougars, which kept the Spartans from gathering any momentum.

In the second half the pace of play picked up for TWU and they began to find openings in the Regina corporate defence.

TWU rookie forward Krista Gommeringer extended her rookie goal scoring streak to six games by heading a perfectly placed cross from defender Jilian Dietrich. Dietrich took a pass from defender Colleen Webber, went up the right side of the park and then hit a cross that sailed over Possberg to Gommeringer, who went high in centre of the box to redirect the ball home and give TWU a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minutes.

In the 68th minute Regina’s Tayler Firsth made TWU’s Funk come up big to keep the Spartans with the two goal margin.

Spartans defender Jennifer Castillo made it a three goal lead when she got on the end of an Alicia Tesan free kick to put TWU up 3-0 on a pretty goal with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Cougars almost got on the board in extra time but once again Funk was able to just get a piece of Karlee Vorrieeter’s shot to maintain the clean sheet.

Kristen Funk made three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season, while Stephanie Possberg made eight saves in the loss.

The Spartans will now host the University of Saskatchewan Saturday night at 5 p.m. at TWU, while Regina will head to UBC to take on the Thunderbirds. Tomorrow’s match for the Spartans is their second to last conference home game of the year.

Match Notes: the last loss for TWU in conference play was 1-0 to UBC on September 10, 2011…Gommeringer now has eight goals and six assists on the season…Funk’s goals against average is now 0.17…TWU outshot Regina 17 to seven in total shots and 11 to three in shots on target…the Spartans also had the edge in corner kicks at nine to three…the last time Regina scored on TWU was Oct. 4, 2003 in a 6-1 Cougar loss…Funk’s shutout streak and TWU record is 422 minutes, which she set last season…she would break the record in her 38th minute of play of her next match…
