FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RECORD NIGHT FOR SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 2 Trinity Western University women’s soccer team defeated the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 Saturday night at Rogers Field on the campus of TWU in Langley, B.C.

The win resulted in a number of milestones for the 7-0-0 Spartans. The victory gives TWU 20 Canada West Conference league matches without a loss going 19-0-1. Their last loss was 1-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds in the first match of last season on September 10, 2011. The 20 matches breaks the unofficial Canada West record of 19 which was held by the 1995 Thunderbirds, who set the record over the space of three seasons starting in 1993 and finishing in 1995. Their streak included a perfect 10-0-0 record in the 1994 season.

Also, the shutout victory saw TWU’s fifth year keeper Kristen Funk break her TWU record for consecutive minutes without giving up a goal. Her previous record of 422 minutes, which she set last year, fell in the 38th minute of play. Funk’s new record now stands at 475 minutes and counting.

All-Canadian Funk made four saves to record her sixth shutout victory of the season, while Saskatchewan’s Marissa Struik made five saves in the loss as the Huskies drop to 3-3-0 on the season.

The Spartans, who outshot the Huskies 14-9 in the match, opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Midfielder Natalie Boyd got her second of the season when she headed a beautiful corner kick from forward Alicia Tesan past Struik and into the top of the Huskies net.

It would be the only goal of the opening frame.

The Huskies defended well and put pressure on the Spartans back line in the second half as they put five second half shots towards the TWU net.

Trinity Western broke the game open in the 82nd minute when defender Jennifer Castillo converted a corner kick from midfielder Jenna Di Nunzio and a flick from Natalie Boyd to put the Spartans up 2-0 with under eight minutes to play.

The Spartans Kristen Santema got her first of the season, and first in since the 2010 season, when slide low to convert a perfect pass from Gommeringer in the 87th minutes.

Trinity Western will now go on the road next weekend to take on the Mount Royal University Cougars and the University of Alberta Pandas next Sat. and Sun. in Alberta. The Huskies will now travel home to host the University of Victoria Vikes and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

Match Notes: TWU rookie Krista Gommeringer saw her consecutive goal scoring streak stopped at six matches…. Santema was unable to play last season, her last conference goal was Oct. 23, 10 in a 1-0 victory over UBC…the match was streamed live on Canadawest.TV…
