Game Recap

Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia  – The Trinity Western women’s soccer team wrapped up its home portion of the regular season with a decisive 7-0 win over Northern British Columbia Friday at Rogers Field.

On the Spartans senior appreciation night, TWU, with seven graduating players, dominated from start to finish, scoring early and often en route to their ninth win of the season and eighth clean sheet. Trinity Western got two goals from both Jessica King (Liverpool, England) and Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) while Nikki Byrne (Langley), Tessa Meyer (Surrey, B.C.) and Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, B.C.) added singles.

With the win, the Spartans can finish no lower than fourth in the Canada West standings and therefore clinched a home date for the first round of the playoffs.

The Spartans outshot the Timberwolves 36-2 as they rolled to their most convincing win of the season. Prior to tonight, TWU had earned 6-0 wins over both Winnipeg and Lethbrigde. The Spartans combined 14 assists set a school record for assists in a game, beating the previous mark of 11, which was set against Regina Sept. 26, 2008. Trinity Western’s 36 shots also set the school record for most shots in a game, beating the previous record of 33, which was also set against Regina on the same night.

With two assists to add to her two goals, Gommeringer, who now has nine goals and 11 assists on the year, is now just three points behind Carlee O’Brien’s for the Spartans single season points record. O’Brien had 12 goals and 11 assists in 2004. Gommeringer is currently tied for second on the list with Nikki Wright’s (Cloverdale, B.C.) 2008 mark, when she had 13 goals and seven assists.  Alicia Tesan (Vancouver), with one assist on the night, is now just one behind O’Brien’s single season record of 11.

The victory improves TWU’s record to 9-1-0 on the season while the loss drops UNBC to 0-8-3.

“I was pleased that we took our chances and we’re able to get ahead early on, which gave us an opportunity to give some minutes to some players who haven’t played as much,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “It’s about us playing the way we want to play and I thought in stages we did that. The game got sloppy as the field got more wet, but I’m really happy that we played quickly and we passed the ball very nicely in the first half.”

Trinity Western’s Meyer got the home side on board in the 12th minute when she found a loose ball in the six-yard box and buried it for her third tally of the season.

With that, the Spartans offensive barrage was launched as Gommeringer scored her 10 of the season two minutes later and Di Nunzio, with her fifth of the year, made it a three-goal margin three minutes after that.

King then got her first of the night in the 31st minute before notching her second in the 39th minute, which pushed her season goal total to five.

The Spartans outshot the Timberwolves 17-1 in the first half.

In the second half, UNBC substituted in goalie Kat Hartwig-Clay for Jordan Hall and the new keeper put on an impressive showing as she made eight saves on 10 TWU shots.

The Spartans did manage to beat Hartwin-Clay twice in the half as Gommeringer earned her second of the night and 11th overall in the 55th minute while Byrne rounded out the scoring with her second of the year in the 72nd minute.

Timberwolves leading goal-scorer Sydney Roy had UNBC’s best chance of the contest in the 62nd minute when she broke down the right wing, beat the Spartans defender and got a shot on net that forced TWU goalie Kristen Funk had to make a quality save.

The Spartans are back in action next weekend when they will play their final two games of the regular season on the road against Fraser Valley Oct. 19 and Victoria Oct. 20.

The Timberwolves will play their last game of their inaugural season at the CIS level Saturday at UBC at 5 p.m.

Match Notes: The Spartans honoured graduating seniors Rachel Antoniuk (Langley), Byrne, Dietrich (Calgary), Funk, Meyer, Chantell Whitehead (Surrey) and Wright… TWU first-year Vanessa Wiebe (Surrey) got her first start as a Spartan as she replaced the injured Colleen Webber (Calgary)…UNBC’s Riley Flannagan was the lone player booked as she received a yellow card in the 57th minute.
