WHITECAPS SQUEAK BY SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Summer Clarke (Richmond, B.C.) scored the lone goal in the 70th minute to lift the Vancouver Whitecaps U-18 squad to a 1-0 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Tuesday night on Rogers Field at TWU in Langley, B.C.

“It was a good exercise for us and I was pleased that we got great minutes for a lot of our young kids,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Disappointed to lose, but we had some good things happening with our players and some of our young players took a step in the right direction.”

The two squads played an evenly contested match. Both teams moved the ball quickly around the park, but were both limited in the amount and quality chances on goal.

Clarke, who also plays with the U17 national team, got a great through ball from Sessen Stevens (Delta, B.C.) and buried the ball low and to the far post to finish off a great run and great play.

Canada West Rookie of the Year Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) had a quality chance earlier, but was stopped by a brilliant save from the Whitecaps keeper.

TWU rookie keeper Christina Oliverio (Calgary) played the full ninety minutes in net for the Spartans.

Next up for the Spartans will be at Oregon State University on Saturday, April 6 in Corvallis, Oregon.

Match Notes: TWU used the match to get a good look at next year’s returning squad…the Spartans played without five of their 2012 Canada West All-Stars: Kristen Funk (Calgary), Colleen Webber (Calgary), Natalie Boyd (Surrey, B.C.), Jilian Dietrich (Calgary) and Nikki Bryne (Langley, B.C.)…
