SPARTANS, BEAVERS PLAY TO DRAW

CORVALLIS, Oregon – Trinity Western’s Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) scored midway through the second half as the Spartans rallied from a one-goal deficit to earn a 1-1 tie with Oregon State Saturday afternoon.

In the 70th minute, Tesan ripped a screamer from the left side that beat the OSU goalie to the far post to give TWU a well-earned draw against NCAA Div. 1 Beavers.

The result puts the Spartans spring record to 2-2-1. They are back in action April 10 when they host Western Washington at 7:30 p.m. before finishing their spring season on the road against Seattle Pacific April 13 at 1 p.m.

“It was a really good game,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “We had to play defensive-minded in the early parts because our personnel was different than what we’re normally used to. But credit to the kids who haven’t played as much. The girls really dug in against a really good team.”

The Beavers got on the board first in the 60th minute when a cross from the right wing into the box was one-timed off the post and in. Spartans goalie Baily Williams-Kapels (Puyallup, Wash.) got a piece of the ball, but not quite enough to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.

Minutes later, OSU, with momentum on its side, had a chance to double its lead, but a shot off the crossbar kept it a one-goal game.

After that, the Spartans battled back.

Pushing forward over the final 30 minutes, TWU finally broke through with Tesan’s marker. Picking up the ball on the left inside channel, Tesan cut to the middle, pushed it passed her defender and slammed the ball to the back of the net.

The Spartans backline was brilliant as the tandem of Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Jenn Castillo (Surrey, B.C.) in the middle largely held off the Beavers attack.

Vanessa Kovacs (North Delta, B.C.) in the middle and Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) up front also put together impressive performances to help the Spartans to a deserved result.
