CANADA WEST REGULAR SEASON
TRINITY WESTERN (5) UBC OKANAGAN (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FIVE-GOAL SECOND HALF SPARKS SPARTANS TO WIN

KELOWNA, British Columbia – The No. 2 Trinity Western women’s soccer team scored five goals in the second half alone in Saturday’s contest against UBC Okanagan to help the Spartans to a 5-1 win over the Heat at Nonis Field.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Spartans exploded in the second half with a brace from both Seina Kashima (Burnaby, B.C.) and Jessica King (Liverpool, England) and a single from Leanne Verhoeff (Calgary), who notched her first ever CIS goal.

For the third time in four games, King scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans, who are now 3-0-1 on the season. Last week’s Canada West 3rd Star of the Week now has five goals in four games.

The win completes a perfect road weekend for the Spartans women, having knocked off Thompson Rivers Friday 3-1.

Both weekend contests marked the first CIS time the Spartans had played either of TRU or UBCO as both schools are fielding women’s soccer teams for the first time in Canada West.

Verhoeff opened the scoring in the 58th minute and, with that, the flood gates opened. King scored just seconds after Verhoeff’s tally and then it was Kashima with a 75th minute goal, King with a marker in the 80th minute and Kashima again in the 85th minute.

The Heat’s Courtney Hemmerling, broke up the Spartans second half goal-fest with UBCO’s lone goal in the 78th minute.

Spartans goalie Christina Oliverio (Calgary) stopped six of the seven shots she faced while UBCO’s Christine Tallon was good on nine of the 14 shots directed her way.

“We’re disappointed that we had a lacklustre first half,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “But in the second half, we challenged them to start fresh and I thought our response was excellent. We made some subs to bring on some fresh legs and I thought Leanne Verhoeff and Stephanie Chin (Calgary) came back and brought us life. I thought Danae Derksen (Delta, B.C.) provided some excellent minutes out wide.

“Overall I’m pleased we came away from the weekend with two wins. Vanessa Kovacs (North Delta, B.C.) continued to lead us in the midfield and Jess King continues on a roll. But there were some good contributions from a number of players who haven’t played as many minutes, so that was encouraging.”

In the first half, neither team generated a whole lot offensively. The Spartans finished the first 45 minutes with four shots on target compared to UBCO’s three.

The Spartans best chance of the first half came from Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) who deflected a cross on target, but was thwarted by Heat keeper Tallon.

After the break, the Spartans made a number of substitutions and the offence started to click.

In the 58th minute, the speedy Danae Derksen (Delta, B.C.) raced down the right wing and sent a bounding cross into the box that found the foot of Verhoeff and the first-year Spartan made no mistake.

Less than a minute later, Chin sent a ball into the box from 25 yards out and King headed it home.

Kashima got in on the action when Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, B.C.) sent a brilliant cross into the box from the left wing, which the Burnaby striker volleyed to the back of the net.

After Hemmerling scored to make it 3-1, King responded just over a minute later when she took a slick through ball from Kashima and, after initially being stopped by Tallon, muscled it into the net.

Kashima rounded out the scoring in the late stages with an individual effort that saw her beat two defenders and slot it home to the low right corner.

The Spartans have a Canada West bye next week before returning to action Sept. 26-27 when they host UBCO Friday and Thompson Rivers Saturday. TWU will play an exhibition contest against Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Sept. 19 at Rogers Field.

UBCO will remain in Kelowna next weekend as they will host Victoria Sept. 19 and UBC Sept. 20.

Game Notes: TWU had a 16-9 edge in shots…UBCO’s Mairi Horth was the only player to be shown yellow...TWU had 11 fouls to UBCO’s seven.
