FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH WIN OVER TIMBERWOLVES

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia - The UNBC Timberwolves held their own against the reigning two-time national champions, the Trinity Western Spartans, on Saturday afternoon but a second half push by the Spartans was enough to defeat the Timberwolves 2-0. TWU moves to 6-0-1 after the win, while UNBC falls to 0-7-2 with the loss.

“I was pleased with how we played today. Kristen Santama and Vanessa Kovacs were strong for us in containing UNBC and controlling the middle of the park,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “I thought UNBC played very well defensively. Krista and Ali were always dangerous and UNBC did a good job of containing us.”

The Spartans kick started the Timberwolves' adrenaline early in the game when Trinity Western rookie forward Seina Kashima (Burnaby, B.C.) crossed the ball into the left side of the box but sent it just out of reach of forward Krista Gommeringer (Calgary).

The Timberwolves made it through their second scare in the 21st minute, when Alessandra Oliverio (Calgary) found space down the left side of the field and worked her way past the Timberwolves defender. UNBC keeper Jordan Hall blocked the shot and was able to save the subsequent rebound as well, keeping the Spartans off the board for the first half. Heading into the break the Timberwolves and Spartans remained tied 0-0, with TWU holding an 11-1 edge in total shots.

In the 66th minute the Spartans found the break they needed to get on the board. A foul on Gommeringer in the box awarded Alessandra Oliverio a penalty kick which she made good on.

The Spartans netted their final goal in the 79th minute. Gommeringer took the ball down the right side of the field and cut it hard across the box, slotting the ball inside the left post and past the Timberwolves keeper. The scoreline would carry until the final whistle, giving the Spartans 2-0 win over the Timberwolves and three more points in the standings.

Trinity Western would finish the game outshooting UNBC 19-3. The Spartans Christina Oliverio made three saves to earn the shutout win, while the Timberwolves Jordan Hall made seven saves in the loss. It is Oliverio’s second consecutive shutout and extends her shutout streak to 222 minutes.

The Timberwolves will have their second of two against the Spartans Sunday afternoon at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League fields. This will be the final home game for the Timberwolves; the game is set to kick off at 12 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU extends their team record conference unbeaten streak to 17 matches (14-0-3). Last conference loss was 2-1 to Victoria on Sept. 13, 2013…other than two losses to Victoria, TWU has not lost a conference or play-off game since Oct. 7, 12 (22-0-2), when they lost 2-0 to Alberta…
