Ryan Hofer has been part of Spartans volleyball, as either a men’s or women’s assistant or head coach, since 2000 and has been the women’s team’s head coach since 2006, when he took the reins from his wife Carol Hofer.

Since then, Hofer has been the catalyst behind six successful seasons of Spartans women’s volleyball.

In his six years as head coach, Hofer has led the Spartans to  five Canada West Final Four tournaments – with his team’s best showings being silver medals in both 2009 and 2011 – and four CIS National Championships, finishing third in 2011, fourth in 2007 and fifth in both 2011 and 2009.

Hofer’s best season with the Spartans came in 2010-11, when he helped TWU to its most successful campaign in program history. Not only did the team finish the year with a national championship bronze medal – the first CIS women’s volleyball medal in TWU history – but it also finished the regular season with a school record 15-3 mark and, also for the first time in school history, climbed to No. 1 in the CIS Top 10.

For his and his team’s efforts and accomplishments, Hofer was recognized as the 2010-11 Canada West and CIS women’s volleyball Coach of the Year.

Prior to 2011, the Spartans fourth place at the national tournament in 2007 marked the best result for a TWU women’s volleyball team.

Before being named head coach of the women’s team, Hofer was an assistant for five years and, in 2006, helped the Spartans win a bronze medal at the Canada West Final Four tournament and guide TWU to its first ever women’s volleyball CIS national championship appearance.

Hofer was the interim head coach for the 2003-04 season, while his wife Carol took maternity leave. In his first head coaching experience at the university level, Hofer led the Spartans women to a 9-23 overall record and with a 5-15 regular season mark.

While as an assistant coach with the Spartans, Hofer was also heavily involved in coaching club volleyball and following the 2004 season, he was named Volleyball Canada’s Male Coach of the Year. That season Hofer went 41-6 and won provincial and national gold medals as coach of the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club’s Blitz U18 team. He was also the assistant coach of the TWU 20U team that won gold at the provincial championship and silver at the national championship.

In 2003, Hofer was the head coach of the Team BC Women U18 squad that won a gold medal at the Western Canada Summer Games.

Hofer amassed a career record of 227 wins, 44 losses while coaching at the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club. He also put together a career record of 42-9 as coach of the TWU Juniors, for a total of 269 wins and 53 losses in club volleyball. During that time, he won three straight U18 provincial championships, three straight U20 provincial championships and six medals at the Canadian Club National Championships.

Hofer has also had experience coaching internationally, with Team Canada, as he has been the head coach or the assistant coach at five major international women’s events. Most recently, in the fall of 2012, he coached his Spartans team, who was representing Team Canada, at the U23 Pan American Cup. Prior to that, Hofer was an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2009 FISU Games in Belgrade, Serbia. In 2005, he was also named assistant coach of Canada’s Junior National Team and, in 2006, was the head coach of Canada’s Youth National Team.

Hofer graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry from Briercrest Bible College. He is a certified NCCP Level III (indoor) and Level II (beach) coach.
