Slow starts hamper Spartans

Langley, British Columbia – For the first match of the 2000-2001 women’s volleyball season the Spartans hosted the Douglas College Royals. The Royals spoiled the Spartans alumni weekend home opener by handing the Spartans a 3-1 loss (26-24, 19-25, 28-26, 25-19).

The Spartans were forced to come from behind in every game of the match. With a lot of their energy spent in catching up with the Royals, the Spartans didn’t have much left to put them over the top and gain the victory’s in crucial sets. In spite of losing 3 games to 1 the Spartans were only 4 points behind Douglas (98-94).

“I think that we had glimpses in greatness in everything, but we lacked consistency in everything at the same time,” said TWU coach Carol Hofer.

The pivotal point of the match was the third game. The Spartans fought from behind, down 22-20, and were serving for the game at 24-23 and at 25-24, but were unable to put the Royals away. Douglas ended up winning the game 28-26 and carried the momentum into the fourth game of the match. Once again the Spartans were down early but this time they were unable to come from behind as Douglas won the fourth and deciding game of the match 25-19.

“By no means did we play our best today, but we played better than we did in our last practice,” said Hofer. “As long as were making progress I’ll be pleased, I’m not satisfied but I’m pleased.”

Kristen Groot (Burnaby, BC) and Daelyn Martens (Chilliwack, BC), both playing their first match, led the way for the Spartans. Groot led the team with 16 kills and a kill efficiency of 35%.  Daelyn, the teams Libero led the team with 13 digs.

“In high school Daelyn primarily was an power hitter, so playing the defensive Libero has been an adjustment for her,” said Coach Hofer. “I think that she played extremely well.”

Next up for the Spartans
Oct. 10 vs. Cascade College. Game time is 6:00 PM at Trinity Western University.
