Spartans Rally Falls Short

Langley, British Columbia
– One point. That’s all that stood between the Spartans and their first victory of the season. Unfortunately for the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team they were not able to capitalize on three match points and lost a 5 set thriller to the Cascade College Thunderbirds 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 25-13, 18-25, 18-16).

“Looking at the game as a whole we are continuing to learn and we played better than we did last game against Douglas,” said TWU Coach Carol Hofer. “It’s a tough loss because we missed an opportunity to get a win tonight, but we will learn from that too.”

After splitting the first two matches the Thunderbirds put the Spartans on the ropes by winning the third game of the set. The Spartans rallied with a strong forth set to push the match to the fifth and final game of the match.

The fifth game was the closest of the match. Both teams exchange points throughout the game. The Spartans first served for the match at 14-13. The Thunderbirds managed a side out to tie the game at 14-14. Cascade was unable to capitalize and quickly gave the point back to the Spartans. At 15-14 the Spartans were again denied the victory when they served into the net.

Serving at 15-15 the Cascades put a double block on TWU middle Lies Verhoeff (Calgary, AB). Verhoeff was unable to get past the two blockers and after fending off 3 match points the Thunderbirds found themselves serving for the match. Down 16-15 the Spartans went to Jolene Dryfhout (Surrey, BC) to fend of the defeat. Dryfhout pounded a perfect set from setter Kelli Martens to tie the game at 16-16.

After an extended rally the Thunderbirds managed to put the ball away off a Spartan. Cascade was once again serving for the match up 17-16. The Spartans Daelyn Martens (Chilliwack, BC) took the serve and made the pass to setter Kelli Martens (Chilliwack, BC). Kelli set the high ball to Lauren Good (Surrey, BC). Good pounded the ball. The ball appeared to go off of the Thunderbird block before landing long. Unfortunately, the ball was ruled out and the Thunderbirds had taken the match from the Spartans.

“This year we are learning to train and learning to compete a bit,” said Hofer. “We will eventually get to the point where we are competing to win, but that is a little ways down the road.”

Statistical leaders for TWU were Jolene Dryfhout 14 kills, 5 digs, Lies Verhoeff 11 kills, 4 serves Aces, Daelyn Martens 13 digs. Statistical leaders for Cascade College were Jeannette Lee (Bend,OR) 10 kills, 14 digs and Jessica Brock (Hillsboro,OR) 10 kills, 16 digs.

Next up for the Spartans is Oct. 13-15 at the University of Saskatchewan for the Saskatchewan Cup.
