TWU Spartans (0) vs. the University of Calgary Dinos (3)
(25-17, 26-24, 25-19)

There for the Taking

Langley, British Columbia –
It was there. The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball lost their match to the University of Calgary Dinos 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) tonight, but the match could have easily gone the other way.

Unforced errors at critical moments prevented the Spartans from gaining the upper hand in the match.

“We had 18 unforced errors in the 3rd set [34 total], we are still making to many unforced errors and that is something that we are going to have to work on, said Hofer. “We are going to make lots of errors, but I want us to make a couple less each night out.”

After losing the first set the Spartans came out strong and were leading in the second set 23-20. The Dinos responded to the challenge and squeaked out the 26-24 victory in set 2.

In set 3 the Spartans struggled in the 10-20 point range enabling the Dinos to pull ahead 18-12. The Spartans continued to battle but could not close the gap losing the final set 25-19.

“I don’t think Calgary really earned the match tonight,” said Hofer. “It was ours for the taking and we did not take it.”

Statistical leaders for the Dinos were Alisa Marriott (Grande Prairie, AB) 8 kills, 9 digs and Lianne Leonardi (Calgary, AB) 7 kills, 8 digs.

Statistical leaders for the Spartans were Kristen Groot (Burnaby, BC) 11 kills, 6 digs and Daelyn Martens (Chilliwack, BC) 11 digs.

“It was a great weekend for us, and the girls have seen that they can compete with any team,” said Hofer. “We need to get better at some things but I’m excited about [next weeks match with] Alberta.”

Next up for the Spartans is in Edmonton, AB at the University of Alberta, November 3 & 4.
